Patrick Callahan 4th Period Public Speaking Demonstration Outline 9/20/11 Introduction I.

How many of you do not know how to tie a necktie? A. Expect 50-50 chance B. Joke: Would one of you who do know how demonstrate it for the class? II. Neckties are important parts to formal dress, though many ignore them A. Long ago beginning in France, people began using ties, and they were at one time an item of clothing worn every day with casual wear B. Many people expect others to help them, and do not learn themselves 1. I bet a lot of us ask our fathers to aid us in tying our neckties 2. Once, a female teacher had to do it for me, because I did not know how! 3. This is how I became committed to teaching others to tie (Though at first confusing, neck tying is easy when broken down into seven steps...) Body I. Put the necktie around the back of your neck, with the thick side on your right A. The pattern on your tie should be facing in front of you, for others to view B. The thick side may need to be a bit lower than the thin side II. Cross the thick side over the thin III. Put the thick side behind the thin IV. Move the thick side around the top of your necktie from right to left A. Sort-of like the shoelace "around the bunny ear" B. The thick side should end up behind the rest of your tie, scratching your neck V. Pull the thick side up through the hole at the top of your tie VI. Slide the thick side through the flap made by the rest of your tie A. This flap may be tight 1. If it is, that's good 2. While pulling it through, make sure the thick side does not wrinkle the rest of your tie! B. Pull hard once the thick side gets through in order to make the tie look nice VII. Your tie is now finished! VIII. Additions A. If you did it right, the top of your necktie should form a triangle B. Tuck the thinner side of your tie underneath the flap behind the thick side C. Different ties reflect different moods, personalities, and occasions 1. Red-and-green ties are common during Christmas time, because of their resemblance to Christmas colors 2. Abstract-painted ties can show an abstract personality! Conclusion I. Did you see how easy tying a necktie can be? A. Joke: If not, I can demonstrate again! B. When broken into steps, neck-tying becomes very simple II. I hope you absorbed these instructions, so that the next time we have an allschool Mass, you will all be able to tie neckties yourselves!
