To achieve opt imum print qualit y and maximum print head life, DATAMAX- ONEI L

media and ribbons must be used. These supplies are specially formulat ed for use in t his
print er. The use of non- Dat amax- ONeil supplies may affect t he print qualit y, performance,
and life of t he print er or it s component s ( see t he Warrant y St at ement ) . For a current list of

Media select ion is an import ant det erminant in t he t hroughput , qualit y, and performance of
t he print ed product . General fact ors t o consider are list ed below:

Di r ect Ther mal

The abrasiveness of t he mat erial covering t he react ive layer of t he media.

The amount of heat required t o st art t he chemical react ion.

The abilit y of t he media t o cont rol t he chemical react ion.

Ther mal Tr ansf er

The combinat ion of t op coat ings and ribbons may affect image qualit y.

The ribbon back coat ing can provide print head prot ect ion and, depending upon t he
formula, help reduce st at ic buildup.

The ribbon widt h, when slight ly wider t han t he media, can also guard against
abrasion.

7.2.1 Cont r ol l i ng Pr i nt Qual i t y

The print er provides flexible print cont rols. Of t hese, t he amount of heat applied and t he
rat e of media movement will have t he most effect on t he print ed out put . Four set t ings are
available via PRI NT CONTROL ( see Sect ion 4. 2. 3) :

HEAT set s t he print ing energy level, where lower amount s light en t he image and
higher amount s darken it ;

PRI NT SPEED adj ust s t hroughput , where slow speeds allow more t ime for energy
t ransfer and fast speeds may require more HEAT t o achieve t he desired cont rast ;

CONTRAST fine- t unes t he gray ( shaded) areas of t he image; and,

DARKNESS fine- t unes t he black areas of t he image.

E Not e: Depending on HOST SETTI NGS, some print qualit y set t ings can be overridden by
