Nursing Implication Culture infection before beginning treatment; reculture if response is not as expected. Continue therapy for at least 2 days after infection has disappeared, usually 7-10 days. Do not administer oral drug with milk, fruit juices or soft drinks; a tall full glass of water is preferred; this oral penicillin is less affected by food than other penicillins.

Generic name: Penicillin V (Penicillin V potassium) Trade name: Veetids

Penicillin V exerts a bactericidal action against sensitive microorganisms during the stage of active multiplication. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cellwall mucopeptide. It is not active against the penicillinaseproducing bacteria, which include many strains of staphylococci. The drug exerts high in vitro activity against staphylococci (except penicillinaseproducing strains), streptococci (groups A, C, G, H, L and M), and pneumococci. Other organisms sensitive in vitro to penicillin V are Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, Clostridia, Actinomyces bovis,

Mild to moderately severe infections caused by sensitive organisms streptococci , pneumococc i, staphylococ ci, fusospiroche tes. Unlabeled uses: prophylactic treatment of children with sickle cell anemia, mild to moderate anaerobic functions
