Rapid Filter
1. Purpose and Outline The rapid filter is one of the sand filter whose tanks are filled with sand or sand and anthracite, etc. to remove suspended solids (hereunder SS) in the wastewater at a high filtration speed. The rapid filter is classified into two main types: the gravity filter using and open tank and pressure filter using a closed tank. The both types remove SS from influent water through filter bed in the tank. In the gravity filter, influent water is filtered by the gravity, while in the pressure filter, the pressure forces the wastewater to go through the filter media. The latter is superior to the former in giving higher filtration speed, allowing the filter to be compact. The rapid filter can be divided further into a single media filter using sand alone and a multi-media filter using sand, anthracite and such. 2. Typical example of construction The figure given below shows the single media pressure filter. (Mitsubishi-Bamag Deep Bed Filter) This filter developed mainly for filtration of iron and oil-containing wastewater for Iron & Steel Mill ensures the filter rate as high as 20 - 40m/h. Air and water can successfully be used to wash filter media. 3. Features of Mitsubishi-Bamag Deep Bed Filter 1) Due to its high filter speed, the filter is small for its treatment capacity. Consequently, investment and plant area are small.

2) Removal of smaller oil particles, solids and scales is effectively achieved. 3) Backwash water consumption is smaller (1-4% of filtered water volume). Regeneration of filter bed is mainly carried out by air, and a small amount of water is introduced as an aid to the backwash by air. 4) Filtering media is perfectly cleaned because backwash air is uniformly distributed through specially designed M-Blocks arranged at the filter bottom.
