The ABCDs of Program Objectives

Youve worked hard to develop, promote and deliver your program. Now its over, and time for you to determine if it met its objectives. How will you know? Did you create objectives for the program when you developed it? The purpose of program objectives and performance outcomes is to define the type of learning that will occur at the conclusion of instruction, and tell you how the learning will be determined. Objectives and performance outcomes should be written as precisely as possible in order to determine whether or not they have been achieved. There are a variety of formats you can use to develop program objectives, but all will include four components: Performance -What will be done ~ Behavior Condition -Under what ~ Condition Criteria -How well ~ Degree Learner -Who ~ Audience One format that is easy to use and easy to remember is the ABCD format. ABCD stands for Audience, Behavior, Condition, and Degree. Here are some examples of how to use the ABCD format of program objectives to develop objectives for Extension programs. After viewing the pruning demonstration, (CONDITION), participants (AUDIENCE) will demonstrate (BEHAVIOR) the correct (DEGREE) procedure for pruning fruit trees 4-H Junior Leaders (AUDIENCE) who have participated in the community service learning experiences (CONDITION) will identify (BEHAVIOR) three (DEGREE) ways their attitudes have changed about homeless individuals. Given the worksheets and formulas presented in the sessions (CONDITION), seminar participants (AUDIENCE) will be able to estimate (BEHAVIOR) with 80% accuracy (DEGREE) the savings they can realize by switching feed supplements for their beef cattle herd. Given the information presented in the seminar (CONDITION), program participants (AUDIENCE) will begin an exercise program (BEHAVIOR) that includes at least 2,000 more steps each day (DEGREE).
