The dance culture in South India

Dance:
Dance is a reflection of ecstacy and emotions. There are 2 types of dances: 1) Classical- these classical idioms has its own characteristics according to the regional uses and manners. 2) Folk- is a dance form where the dancers express their emotions with easy and spontaneous movements.

Status of dance:
Dance has an important status in society. Dance is not only a medium of entertainment but it is a medium which can depict several facets of life in a beautiful way. Thus, dance has a great place socially and religiously. In olden days, dance was an art which was offered as a form of worship in temples. GEETAM AVADHARYA, VADYAM AVADHARYA. NRITYAM AVADHARYA this was said in the temples and offered as a part of the pooja.

Practice of dance as an art form is an integral part of the culturally inclined individuals in Tamil Nadu. The main form that has been practiced from the end of kruta yug and beginning of treta yug is Bharatnatyam. A lesser known fact is that this form initially originated in the courts of Mysore kings but later was adopted as the state dance of TN.

Different styles:
There are different styles in Bharatnatyam: 1) Tanjore style 2) mysore style 3) Kalakshetra style Mysore style is the oldest style that is practiced even today.

The other major dances of South India are: 1) Kathakali (Kerala, men) 2) Mohiniattam (Kerala, women- enchantress) 3) Kuchipoodi ( A.P, men) 4) Yakshagana (K.K, Folk) 5) Kolata (K.K, folk)
