DECEMBER MATH PROBLEM OF THE MONTH

A quadrilateral has vertices labeled A, B, C, and D, in clockwise order. Its diagonals, AC and BD, intersect at a point labeled O. The following information is known about the lengths of line segments: BO = 4, OD = 6, AO = 8, OC = 3, and AB = 6. Find the length AD.

Rules: Answers must be submitted in before the month ends, with one full name and one email address printed at the top of the first page of the submission. Only one individual whose name and email address appear at the top of the first page of an answer can receive credit for it, and only one answer will be graded for any individual. Any tools, including books, calculators, computers, computer programs, and the internet, may be used in order to produce or support an answer. Any explanations or proofs of an answer should show as much work as possible, documenting any necessary tools used in any steps towards producing or proving the answer. Answers can either be written on the back of this sheet or on separate sheets of paper, or typed and then printed.

Answers should be submitted to Mr. Davis in room 100 (314), either with this page as a cover page or separately with a full name and email written at the top of the first page. Any answer following the rules will be graded and have its results sent to the provided email address within the following month. Any graded answer which is judged to show a correct and complete solution to the problem will win a prize.
