While on a mission to deliver medical supplies to the New Paris colony, the Enterprise investigates a previously unexplored quasar-like phenomenon known as Murasaki 312. Commander Spock leads an exploratory team into Murasaki 312, but their shuttle crashes on a remote planet and the crew's communication with the Enterprise is severed. With the deadline to deliver the medical supplies approaching, Kirk faces a heavy choice: obey orders and leave his stranded friends behind, or risk everything to rescue them. Meanwhile, Spock and the shuttle crew face a deadly threat posed by the planet's native inhabitants...
