Chapter 2 Earth Patterns

Section 1 thinking like a geographer

To learn more about the world you study geography, features in the earth People try to understand what a place is like. Land form are individual features of land like mountains and plateaus Sometimes people interact with their natural surroundings, or environment. Sometimes to locate a place geographers use a satellite system called GPS (global positioning system) Another tool geographers use is GIS (geographic information systems) this helps them put a lot of collected data onto a map

Section 2 physical geography

Have you ever heard of volcanoes and earth quakes? These are caused because of plate tectonics, pieces of the earth floating around. There are 2 types of flat regions called plains and plateaus but, the difference is that plains are flat, and plateaus are flat and elevated. Another type of land form is a canyon, steep-sided lowlands that have a river cutting through them Weather has predictable patterns called climate In weather, there are warmer climates called tropics. They are located between tropic of Cancer and tropic of Capricorn. If you are unfamiliar with the topics research about them. Greenhouse effects are part of weather, this is when warm air is prevented from escaping the atmosphere. This is a leading danger that will increase the earths temperature and is because of pollution.

Section 3 People and environment

You have to manage water supplies. This is called conservation. Farming uses a lot of water. We add pesticides ,chemicals that kill crop destroying insects these chemicals soak in the water, causing harm When growing plants, farmers need to give soil minerals. So they use the process of crop rotation, planting new crops to avoid using up all the minerals in soil But if farmers arent careful about the soil it will erode. Soil erosion is when dry soil is carried away from the ground by wind or water. Forests are also in problem. People cut trees to make more farmland. This is called deforestation. The air is also affected by pollution. The fumes from vehicles and sulfur oxide from coal burning plants can easily mix with the moisture in air. This is called acid rain.
