EVPP 490: Tools and Techniques for International Development will prepare students to work

in the project management level in agencies such as US state departments, NGOs, and International NGOs. It will provide a basic understanding of and training in operational tools, contemporary skills and exposure to selected agencies, with a strong emphasis on practicality and a how-to: do/functional approach that can be applied to projects on environment, poverty reduction, social development, green growth, health, and more. Throughout the course, emphasis will be given on skill building exercises relevant to the project management process. Content (but not limited): Proposal Writing for Funding, Project Cycle Analysis, Participatory Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Strategic Assessments, Impact Assessment and Public Participation (including Stakeholder Analysis), Problem Analysis, Team and Partnership Building. Resource: reports, analytical work and tool kits from developmental organizations such as United States Agencies for International Development (USAID), Department for International Development UK (DFID), World Bank, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and peer-reviewed journals. Course will include several lectures from professionals working in DC-based agencies. About the Instructor: Vivek Prasad has extensive training and work experience in developing countries. He has worked in international development issues for more than five years in India and for the last two years he has provided support to The World Bank. He has published on a variety of issues related to project management and the developmental policy of developing countries. He received his PhD from the Department of Environmental Science and Public Policy at George Mason University.
