Title: Transmission of sinusoidal signals through optical fibers Objective: To analyze a sinusoidal signal transmitted through an optical fiber

Apparatus:
Cathode Ray Oscilloscope Function Generator

Procedure:
1. a sinusoidal signal of 10KHz 200 mVpp was obtained from the function generator connected to socket 34 of Exp Unit and its ground -1. 2. The potentiometer P10-BIAS of Exp Unit was regulated to obtain minimum distortion. 3. Channel-1 of the oscilloscope was connected to monitor the input signal while channel-2 the output signal between socket 39 and ground-1 of Exp Unit 4. The two signals obtained were compared

Results:

From fig 1 (b),

1. Periodic Time T = 5cm x 20S/cm = 100S 2. Frequency f = 1/T = 1/(100S) = 10KHz 3. Change in phase between the input and output is not observable. 4. Amplitude of input signal is 0.1V/cm x 2 cm = 0.2V = 200mVpp

5. Amplitude of output signal is 0.1V/cm x 2.8cm = 280mVpp 6. Gain = output amplitude/input amplitude = 280/200 = 1.4 =2.92dB

Title: Transmission of impulsive signals through optical fibers Objective: To analyze an impulsive signal transmitted through an optical fiber Apparatus:
Cathode Ray Oscilloscope Function Generator

Procedure:
1. a rectangular signal of 10KHz 200 mVpp was obtained from the function generator connected to socket 34 of Exp Unit and its ground -1. 2. Channel-1 of the oscilloscope was connected to monitor the input signal while channel-2 the output signal between socket 39 and ground-1 of Exp Unit 3. The two signals obtained were compared 4. The frequency was increased and the uphill and downhill fronts of the output signal noted.

Results:

From fig 2 (b),

7. Periodic Time T = 2cm x 50S/cm = 100S (fig 2 (a)) 8. Frequency f = 1/T = 1/(100S) = 10KHz 9. Change in phase between the input and output is not observable. 10. Amplitude of input signal is 0.1V/cm x 2 cm = 0.2V = 200mVpp 11. Amplitude of output signal is 0.1V/cm x 2.8cm = 280mVpp 12. Gain = output amplitude/input amplitude = 280/200 = 1.4 = 2.92 dB 13. The uphill front lags by about 0.4cm x 10S/cm = 4S while the downhill lags by about 0.2cm x 10S/cm = 2S 14. The uphill and downhill lags get worse with increase in input frequency
