COMM 163 ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS (1x4%, 1x7%)

PURPOSE: The purpose of this assignment is to give students the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions/debate and to learn how to contribute to, and engage in workplace discussions. PROCESS: 1) Students will be divided into two teams. 2) As a group, the class will choose a topic to discuss/debate from the list below. 3) The class will decide upon a question/issue to discuss, based on the topic. Teams may wish to choose sides for or against the topic/question. 4) Each team will research the topic. Each team is expected to find 2 articles on the topic for the first roundtable, and 3 articles on the topic for the second roundtable. Articles can be drawn from newspapers, magazines, and academic journals. 5) Articles for the first roundtable must be reviewed by your professor by __________. Articles for the second roundtable must be reviewed by your professor by ______________. 6) Teams should bring their research to the roundtable to support them in their discussion. 7) Each team will come to class on the appointed day, prepared to debate/discuss the question/issue. The first roundtable discussion should last approximately 15-20 minutes. Each student on each team is expected to contribute to the discussion/debate. The second roundtable discussion should last approximately 30-45 minutes. Once again, each student will be expected to contribute to the discussion/debate. Possible topics for first roundtable: Workplace communication Workplace ethics Stress in the workplace Conflict and conflict resolution in the workplace Dealing with negativity Possible topics for the second roundtable: Global warming Human rights violations Sweatshops Aboriginal land claims Human trafficking
