Chemical Engineering 131 TRANSPORT PROCESSES Department of Chemical Engineering College of Engineering University of the Philippines Diliman Provide

complete solution or discussion to the following items. For problems, make sure to write your assumptions. Box all final answers. In cases of discussion, underline the important points. For all solutions and answers written, make sure to cite the references where you have based your solution and/or discussion. NO CITATION OF REFERENCE, NO CREDIT.

1.) VARIABLE TRANSPORT AND COUPLED GENERATION: Two immiscible fluids are in contact. Fluid I is denser and is also well mixed. The concentration of species a is cao everywhere within this fluid and the temperature in fluid I is held constant at To. Species a diffuses through stagnant fluid II and undergoes a first-order (ab) to form species b within the fluid. Assume constant properties for both phases. The reaction occurs having a rate constant of k and is occurring in an exothermic manner, giving Hr joules per mole of a reacted. The following boundary conditions apply at x=0, ca = Keqcao and T=To and at x = L, (dca/dx)=0 and (dT/dx)=0. Determine the concentration and temperature profiles for this system.

2.) Write the continuity, momentum, energy and species continuity equations for turbulent flow in all dimensions in the rectangular coordinate system. Describe one equation (one for continuity, one for momentum, one for energy and one for species continuity).

3.) Discuss the boundary layer theory for laminar flow and turbulent flow for heat, mass and momentum transfer. Include all necessary graphs, tables and applications in transport phenomena. Provide one sample problem with solution for each form of transport (One for Mass, One for Heat and One for Momentum).

4.) How can one measure eddy diffusivities? On what factors do these eddy diffusivities depend?
