[BMX] Analysis Features. Measure: Distance

Behavioral Modeling Extension. Analysis Feature. Measure: Distance. This example describes basic Pro/ENGINEER capabilities of evaluating distances/lengths between different references (Quick evaluation, i.e., datum/analysis feature not created). Download Initial Example Files For This Suggested Technique: beh11844_initial.zip

Start the example by retrieving the top level assembly in a Pro/ENGINEER session. 1. From the main menu select: >Analysis >Measure >Distance. In this example you'll measure the distance between nail.prt and head.prt. An analysis feature is a regular Pro/ENGINEER datum feature that is used to capture a measurement. The measure analysis feature may contain a regular Pro/ENGINEER analysis, user-defined analysis, or feature relation. 2. The feature consists of the following: Type (Quick, Saved, Feature), Definition (the references about to be selected), and Feature (the result of the measure to be included in the feature). Technical Tip There are three types of analyses you can perform: Quick - Displays the results of the calculations "on the fly" Saved- Saves the setup of the analysis for future use. Access saved analyses using: >Analysis >Saved Analysis Feature- Captures the analysis within a feature in your model. The feature, and analysis, will update as changes are made in your model. In this example, you'll use Quick and no [BMX]-related features will be created.

The selection of geometrical references is very easy to perform in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 (use the CTRL key to select multiple references). If the wrong geometrical reference was selected, access the tab called Definition and remove the references that you need to reselect. You can also hold the CTRL key and click on the feature you'd like removed from the selected references.

Select the following references in order to evaluate the distance: 3. The surface of nail.prt component as primary reference. 4. The surface of head.prt component as second reference. The distance is evaluated both in the Pro/ENGINEER UI, as well as in the Results section of the Measure definition window. Technical Tip You can use the configuration option clearance_triangulation to improve the quality of the results of an Analysis feature. Setting this configuration option affects the quality of the initial guess for Newton's method, used in distance, clearance, and interference computations. Note that the improved quality of computations increases the analysis time.

5. Complete (or Cancel) the feature. If you perform a Quick and/or Saved type, no feature (s) will be created in the model. If in doubt, check the model tree. Note: ensure that the display filter for Features is turned on in the Pro/ENGINEER Model Tree. In order to take another Distance measure, simply click in the same definition window, and select other geometrical references.
