The first intertextual reference Dan Black has used is the opening for Universal films.

Universal normally create big blockbuster films so by using a very similar opening for his music video, hes trying to show that his video is going to be like a film using examples of famous films. Here he has used pretty much the same opening for the film Lost Highway

Another example is the use of TRON. The film had a big budget so used lots of high tech graphics that Dan Black has tried to re-create. I think he was trying to show that he was on a much lower budget yet still managed to use similar effects in just a music video.

Hes also used a very similar opening to the film Catch Me If You Can. As well as using a piece of music from the film Starman, he has also copied the beginning to the film.

Dan black has used the same idea as Sin City here. I think the reasons behind this choice is the film is about corruption so hes trying to compare it to the music business which he believes is corrupt too. Hes also used intertextual references from a black and white French film called A Bout De Souffle. By doing this he shows hes a bit more open minded with films and isnt sticking to the popular main stream films that everyone has seen as this one probably hasnt been seen by many. Here Dan Black has used an 80s film called King Solomans Mines. This scene has been taken from the TV series Bonanza. Just like King Solomans Mines it shows a variation in genres. This intertextual reference from a Japanese film also helps to reinforce Dan Blacks knowledge of foreign films to show hes not close minded like everyone else in the industry. The idea behind this scene is E.T. I think its been used as it is a very iconic film that everyone will recognise. This has been taken from the film Donnie Darko. Its quite a strange film with an unusual concept and it wasnt known to me before so I think he wanted to show a sinister side. Here Dan Black has used a very similar idea to Thunderbirds.

Hes also used another classic film in this scene, King Kong.
