Novel Study NIPS XI

Overview
Nips XI will be a whole class learning novel that will have one lesson a week. Students will be reading the chapters at the same time, and we will be evaluating each chapter together. In addition, students will be completing individual contracts that relate to this novel.

- Students explore what multiculturalism is and how it is portrayed in the novel. - Class is split into two groups: one group writes a narrative from the perspective of a child who has recently arrived from a country and has suffered hardship of war and poor living. One group writes a narrative of a child who has grown up in a privileged household with ideals that are against allowing other races to live in Australia. Discuss and share narratives. -Write a short exposition on why it is important that young people grow

Students write a narrative on one topic-they must write a version that includes Australian slang, and then write another version where the slang is changed into formal and correct English. How does the language meet the needs of particular audiences? Students are to evaluate the story so far. They may design a collage and use pictures from various resources (magazines, net, newspapers). - Discuss with students how cricket has enhanced relationships in this story. Students write a review on how cricket has changed particular characters in the story. - Students write a discussion on Australian sportsmanship. Students are to write their own synopsis that best summarises this book. - Students are to write an honest review on this novel (response text).
