Ch.1 Check & Challenge Page 27 1.Atoms make up elements.

2.The particles of an atom are electrons(-), neutron(no charge),and proton(+).Proton and neutron are located in nucleus and electron out in the cloud. 3. The six elments most important in organisms are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur.

1.Chemical reactions are important in cells because they're the only way to form new molecules for growth and maintenance, and the making and breaking of bonds changes energy. 2.The two chemical bonds are ionic bond and covalent bond. Ionic bond is the attraction between two oppositely charged ions. Covalent bond is when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. 3. The law of conservation of matter states matter can't be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. 4. pH is important to living organisms because the pH of a cell's interior helps regulate the cell's chemical reactions. 5. The polarity of water assists the movement of molecules by the electric atrraction between polar molecules and water.

1. Building-block molecules combine to form each of the four types of biological macromolecules by (carbohydrates) sugar creating energy,(lipids) fatty acids make up simple fats most common in our diets and bodies,(proteins) amino acids polarity affects their ability to dissolve in water, (nucleic acid) nucleotides create genetic structures. 2.The relationship between the primary and tertiary structure of a protein they form complex chain structures. 3. The three part structure of a nucleotide consist of a pentose( 5-carbon sugar), a nitrogen containing base, anda phosphate group. 4. The chemical structures of a ribose and a deoxyribose differ by the sugar in its form. RNA has uracil whie DNA has thymine.

1.The DNA structure determines which nitrogen bases form pairs in DNA. 2.The sequence of the complementary strand GAACT. 3.Four life processes in which DNA plays an important role are mutation, evolution, reproduction, and recombination.
