Conflicts and Clashing: The Aftermath of the Nanjing Massacre

Olivia Xiang Junior Division Individual Website

Process Paper I remember as a child when my grandfather had told me about an event that left a bitter history between China and Japan. I decided to research more about it this year and found out about the 1930s Nanjing Massacre. Reading more about it, I wondered what the consequences as a larger picture were. I also remembered learning about the Holocaust and its consequences. For research, I looked through many websites about the aftermath of the Nanjing Massacre. What I found most interesting was that while the Massacre happened in 1938, the formal attempt to put the past behind and start the future anew was in 1972. Looking into it, I realized that there were many parts to the conflict that caused this embittered relationship. I researched the roots of the various uproars, and decided that this was the best way to approach the theme for this year. For my project, I decided to do a website because I believed that this was the best way to present all the information I had. I decided to put my arguments into 2 main categories: Contrasting Viewpoints and how it affected the Political Relationships. Under each one, I stated the different views of both sides of the Nanjing Massacre and the years that followed. My project relates to this years theme of Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History in all three ways. The Nanjing Massacre is a revolutionary event that changed Chinas history and their relationship with Japan permanently. Reforms

are made from both governments. But mainly, everything is a reaction: the actions of Government Officials are reactions against events that happen, the citizens reactions cause protests, and the protests reactions causes reform and change in history.
