Kinetic Type- The technical name for "moving text"is an animation technique mixing motion and text. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion. Similar to the study of traditional typography of designing static typographic forms, kinetic typography focuses on understanding the effect time has on the expression of text. Kinetic typography has demonstrated the ability to add signicant emotive content and appeal to expressive text, allowing some of the qualities normally found in lm and the spoken word to be added to static text. Kinetic type has been widely and successfully used in lm as well as in television, movie title sequences and credits and computer-based advertising (web page animation and other entertainment media). Perceptual psychology research on attention, reading performance, and comprehension has indicated that time-based presentation of text can be used effectively to capture and manipulate a viewers attention and in some cases improve overall reading performance. You will need to investigate the skills used within Kinetic type, and this will prepare you in producing a short animation built within Flash that will demonstrate ability in producing text and images that evoke the emotion from a lm qoute. A range of movie audio extracts will be randomly distributed to you all on an individual basis. This selection of audio will then be visually explained with the use of Flash. You will create the mood or message of the audio with moving type and graphics to produce a professional outcome.

Research into the Application of Kinetic Type Kinetic Type and Flash will be a new subject matter to you, so research is imperative in gaining knowledge. Your research will benet you with information and inspiration to produce a short kinetic type presentation at a later stage.

In the rst week, you will need to:

glanhafren@gmail.com Useful Information

Identify where Kinetic Type is used in T.V/ Film media. These will commonly be TV adverts, movie title sequences or credits. It is essential that you carry out screenshots with a range of annotations, noting the designer as well as explaining the general design, media (i.e photographic, handrawn, or graphical), animation techniques, emotions, atmosphere, hidden messages, proposed target audience, etc.

Identify where Kinetic Type is used in web. There is a vast array of readily available examples. Most explain script from movies, others are used in advertising. Once again, it is important to include all personal annotation as highlighted in the previous requirement.

Research into how Kinetic Type is produced. You will need to investigate software such as: Adobe Flash, Adobe After Effects, and Apple Motion.

Compare the differences between contemporary Kinetic type techniques and still image advertising (These can be traditional methods,i.e mixed media techniques, or non traditional, i.e digital). You will need to apply screenshots and make comparisons of the both techniques. You should also make note on why either method works best, according to its intent or target audience.

Kinetic Type - Week 2

Programme: Project: Unit: Cohort: Issued: Level 3 Extended diploma in Graphic Design Kinetic Type 4 Communication through Art & Design Graphic Design Year 1 Thursday 23rd January 2012

Project Deadline: 23rd February 2012

Concept development This section will allow you to produce a large number of design pages that will allow you to experiment with different designs, graphics, colour schemes, etc. These sketches will all form the structure of your short kinetic animation that will explain your (pre- prescribed movie audio script). These pages should be fully annotated. We want to see your development of ideas. Generate initial concept sketches and developments by applying a range of drawing/ presentation techniques. Please note homework is compulsory at this stage.

Initial Ideas (At least 6 pages) - high quality illustrated and annotated initial ideas pages .
At this stage you should closely listen to your audio script and look out for keywords that will be benecial in your animation. The lm will be randomly selected by yourserlves, but you will choose the minute long audio to apply kinetic type to. Various words may allow you to produce graphics that will also work alongside your moving/ animated text.

Design Developments (At least 2 pages). Further detailed with high regard to how the text/ images will be utilised within your animation. You may want to also use primary based images, or personal sketches (mixed media) alongside your text within your animation, so these will need to be developed.

Storyboard your animation, so you will know how each scene will proceed to the next. You should type up all the words used within your script that will prepare you for the nal digital animation.

You will be working towards Unit 4 Learning Outcomes [2, 3, 4]
