The School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, an autonomous institution of MHRD, Government of India, is a premier Institute of National Importance. It is committed to produce environmentally responsible architects and planners. The school is hosting this competition along with Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board which is an organization with the Department of Forests, Govt. of M.P. For this National Student Design Competition on Synergies between Nature and Buildings for Ecotourism the students are expected to design an ecotourism destination in a forest reserve at Laharpur, Bhopal which can serve as a model example of eco friendly architecture for eco tourism in India. The students are encouraged to think beyond the traditional practice of designing tourist resorts and come up with solutions that are sensitive to ecological principals and generate awareness of the environment.

The winning entries will be widely publicized on the websites of the MP Ecotourism Development Board and also be published in SPANDREL, SPA- Journal. Students of all shortlisted entries will be entitled to free participation to a Workshop on Synergies between nature and buildings, to be held in March 2012, at the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal.
The site selected for the competition is at Laharpur, located on the south-east edge of Bhopal city, 23 12 N, 77 30E. The area of the site is 151,126 Sq.m. Bhopal has the distinction of having several sites of unique natural value both within and around the city. Some of the primary existing attractions are the Upper Lake and the Van Vihar protected area, Kerwa dam, Kaliasot dam, Bhojpur Temple and Bhimbetka Caves, besides several smaller lakes and forests. Laharpur is an emerging ecotourism destination of natural scenic value. It is situated on a rocky plateau, the slopes are steep, covered in red soil. The MP Ecotourism Board is developing a botanical garden in the Laharpur area, and intends developing facilities for ecotourism. The organisers seek innovative, cutting-edge, contemporary proposals, which may also be used as a prototype for other forest based ecotourism destinations within the State. Participants are invited to explore ways to create spaces that promote awareness, understanding, enthusiasm and commitment to the natural environment. Architecture should assimilate the synergies of nature and building. Entries should show a commitment to an approach and strategy for enhancing the resource potential of the protected natural area through sensitive architecture displaying a deep understanding of the surrounding environment. Proposals may include adaptations of vernacular and traditional architecture to new technologies and alternatives to prevailing construction methods or even traditional architecture using natural materials. Integration of the use of alternative energy sources for heating/cooling/lighting, rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, composting and solid and liquid waste management in the design proposals is expected. The architecture must display an understanding of operation and maintenance issues conforming to best international practices in ecotourism.

The use of the destination will be of low to medium intensity. The list below is indicative and participants may adopt a different approach to the provision of accommodation and other facilities. 1. Camping and picnic facilities. These will include area for tents with bath, toilets, washing and outdoor cooking facilities, picnic benches, pergolas, machan/watch tower and other facilities as anticipated such as water spouts, outdoor seating, waste disposal bins. Other nature friendly activities may be anticipated and facilities provided. 2. At least 10 Prototype units for twin sharing accommodation, which will be of a suite type room with an attached bath.
NOTE: Detailed landscaping of open areas is expected, with adequate but discreet, parking, defined edges, hard surfaces for pedestrian movement, flower beds and planned forests. Innovative and practical ideas to enhance the attractiveness of the site as an ecotourism destination will be appreciated. Access for the disabled on the entire site will also be appreciated. Govt. Of India standards for tourism accommodation are available on the following websites: http://tourism.gov.in/Uploaded/Guideline/123020100502704.pdf http://www.incredibleindia.org/newsite/pdf/Camp%20sites.pdf Further information will be made available on the two websites indicated for the competition, to familiarise students with standards and best international practices for ecotourism destinations.

LAHARPUR
Site Considerations
Laharpur area covers approximately 1700 Ha. and primarily the entire strata is of hard rock and there is no source of available water except rain or deep tube well. Though one deep tube well can offer complete harvesting for 10 acres of land for appropriate greenery but location of water pockets and depth is uncertain at this hill top. However, the existing and functioning bore-well at this place offers nearly 3 inches dia water spout, which was made available at a depth of nearly 400 feet through rocks. Such borewell though possible but at a exorbitant expense. The catchment of rainwater on this hill top is volumeness but entire rainwater drains down and wasted for without any appropriate conservations. Certain percolation tank is dug into 3 places and small natural lake also exists, which is comparably of negligible size but no efforts to pump out recharge water through percolations have yet been made. Other than rainy season and nearly 2 months during winter the temperature and humidity is so high that it becomes impossible to let the plant survive. Temperature in Bhopal during peak time ranges between 37 to 45 degree, which is so high that it becomes impossible to make the fully grown plants or tree plantation survive.
