S4 Physics Notes

24 September 2011 [Summary of lessons given before 16 September 2011]

The objective of the first lesson was to enable learner to have a feel for number representing physical quantities, and to ignite interest of the learners in physics by outlining the vista of physics. Enabling learning to see where they are and where they are going in their study of physics one of very effective ways of teaching the subject. The linear approach in covering the syllabus has been found wanting in many ways. Accordingly, the first lesson aimed to make three important points that will guide the learners throughout their study of physics: 1. Matter is made up of basic constituents including the electron, the proton, and the neutron. These constituents are arranged in such a way to form matter that we can see, feel and touch. The learners will encounter this concept throughout their study of physics. The model of the atom was introduced. This is part of the syllabus and is covered in section 11.01 of the physics textbook. 2. the concept of force is essential for the study of matter. There are only four fundamental forces of nature which affect matter. The first three forces are gravity, the electromagnetic force, and the weak force (which explains radioactivity). All these including radioactivity are part of S4 physics syllabus. The concept of radioactivity was linked to the International Year of Chemistry 2011, which is currently being celebrated globally. The overview also included discussion of
