The world just got a tad stranger in 2011.

India was no stranger to the melodrama played around in the world. The inhabitants of the world also contributed considerably to make the world a worse place to live. India Won WC 2011 Indian Cricket Team Won World Cup, 2 April The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup was the tenth Cricket World Cup. It was played in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The World Cup took place between 19 February and 2 April 2011, with the first match played on 19 February 2011. India won the tournament defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final in Mumbai. India became the first nation to win a World Cup final on home soil. Indias Yuvraj Singh was declared the man of the tournament.

Mamta Banerjee Mamta Banerjee CM of West Bengal, 20 May Mamata Banerjee born 5 January 1955 became the 11th chief minister of the Indian state of West Bengal. She is the first woman to hold the office. Banerjee founded All India th Trinamool Congress in 1997 and became chairperson, after separating from the Indian National Congress. On 20 May she became the Chief Minister.

Mumbai Blasts 2011 Mumbai Bomb Blasts, 13 July The 2011 Mumbai bombings (often referred to as 13 July or 13/7) were a series of three coordinated bomb explosions at different locations in Mumbai, India, on 13 July 2011 between 18:54 and 19:06 IST. The blasts occurred at the Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar, and Dadar West localities, leaving 26 killed, and 130 injured.

Bangalore metro Metro in Bangalore, 20 October Namma Metro, is a mass-transit rail system for the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The agency responsible for its implementation is the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). The first stretch between Baiyyappanahalli and M.G. Road was inaugurated on October 20, 2011.

Hospital Fire in Kolkata Fire in Hospital in Kolkata, 9 December - A fire broke out in a Kolkata AMRI hospital on 9 December 2011. The fire spread fast from the basement of the hospital, engulfing one ward after the other and trapping hundreds of people. Around 25 fire engines was rushed to the spot. The fire fighters were seen using hydraulic ladders to rescue the patients and office staff by cutting open the glasses with gas cutters. 89 patients including three hospital staffers had lost their life in the incident. Out of the 150 admitted patients in the hospital, 90 were rescued. Emami shares fell down by 1.71% on the day incident took place. Six board members have been arrested for the death incident.

Sikkim earthquake 2011 Earthquake in Sikkim, 18 September The 2011 Sikkim earthquake , also known as the 2011 Himalayan earthquake, was a magnitude 6.9 (Mw) earthquake centered within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, near the border of Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim, at 18:10 IST (12:40 UTC) on Sunday, 18 September 2011. The earthquake was felt across northeastern India, Nepal,Bhutan, Bangladesh and southern Tibet. At least 111 people were killed in the earthquake. Most of the deaths occurred in Sikkim, with reports of fatalities in and near Singtam in the East Sikkim district.

Anna Hazare Anna Hazare Hunger Strike Anna Hazare began his Indefinite Fast on 5 April 2011 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to press for the demand to form a joint committee of the representatives of the Government and the civil society to draft a stronger anti-corruption bill with stronger penal actions and more independence to the Lokpal and Lokayuktas (Ombudsmen in the states), after his demand was rejected by the Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. He stated, I will fast until Jan Lokpal Bill is passed After that Anna also went to Fast unto Death from 16 August. He was even arrested later released and carried his fast at Ram Leela Maidan.

Padmanabhaswamy Temple Gold found at Padmanabhaswamy Temple, 2 July The stash of valuables was discovered in five (total six) underground vaults at the Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum city of Kerala state in India. Sacks filled with gold jewels, coins, diamonds, precious stones were found in the vaults of the 16th century Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, which was the royal chapel of the former ruler of Travancore, now part of Kerala state. In fact, the secrets of cellars revealed due to a petition filled by lawyer to open the vaults which was assumed to remain closed since 16th century AD. The Gold is worth of more than 500 Million Rupees.

Akash Tablet Akash Tablet Launched, 5 October The Aakash is an Android tablet computer jointly developed by the Londonbased company DataWind with the Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthanand manufactured by the India-based company Quad, at a new production centre in Hyderabad under a trial run of 100,000 units. The tablet was officially launched as the Aakash in New Delhi on Oct 5, 2011. A substantially revised second generation model is projected for manufacture beginning in early 2012.

A Raja A.Raja arrested 2G Scam, 2 February In January and February 2011, Rajas homes and offices were raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Computers were reportedly seized as part of the evidence that the CBI plans to present against him. Raja and two former associates were arrested on February 2, 2011. The 3 have been taken to Patiala House Courts for enquiries by the CBI on 3 February 2011 After the end of his custody with CBI, Raja was sent to Tihar Jail for judicial custody until March 3, 2011. His stay in the Tihar Jail was then extended, first to March [ 17 and then to March 31.under judicial custody.

Suresh Kalmadi Suresh Kalmadi Arrested CWG Scam, 25 April On April 25, 2011 Kalmadi was arrested by CBI for awarding illegal contracts to a Swiss firm for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the 2010 Commonwealth Games causing a loss of Rs 95 crore to the exchequer. Kalmadis membership of the Indian National Congress Party was suspended after being arrested and charged with corruption. On April 26, 2011 he was sacked from the post of president of the Indian Olympic Association.

Delhi High Court Blast Bomb Blast in Delhi High Court, 7 September The 2011 Delhi bombing took place in the Indian capital Delhi on Wednesday, 7 September 2011 at 10:14 local time outside Gate No. 5 of the Delhi High Court, where a suspected briefcase bomb was planted. The blast killed 12 people and injured 76.

Baba Ramdev Baba Ramdev on Hunger Strike Baba Ramdev declared to go on an Anshan (indefinite fast) on June 4, 2011 at Ramlila Ground Delhi to pressure the Central Government to root out corruption from India and bring back the black money stashed away in various financial institutions abroad. After this declaration the government was said to have set up a panel to suggest steps to curb black money and its transfer abroad, in an apparent bid to placate Ramdev. Satyagrah was going on even in the night of 4 June 2011. Sources informed Baba Ramdev that a huge police force can try to clear Ramlila Ground and if it is not done they can also kill him in a fake encounter or set fire in the tents. At midnight, a huge team of 10,000 officers of the Delhi Police and RAF raided the ground when most of the Satyagrahis were sleeping on the and Ramdev was also sleeping on the dias along with his core group. A large police force lobbed tear gas shells and lathicharged to evict the crowd from 1a.m. to 4 a.m. The tent was set on fire at many places. Cold water was thrown over power generators to create complete darkness to prevent any video recording of the whole attack. However most media persons recorded what was going on.
