Salmon fishing is important to Yurok economy today. The environment had rivers full of salmon where the Yurok lived. The Cherokee Indians lived in the southeast long ago. The rich soil of the piedmont helped the Cherokee to grow vegetables. A Cherokee named Sequoyah invented a way to write down the Cherokee language. The Cherokee who followed the Trail of Tears traveled west. European settlers changed the life of the Cherokee because they fought the Cherokee for land and other resources. The Haudenosaunee lived in the forest in New York. The Peacemaker helped the Haudenosaunee form a government and constitution. Five Haudenosaunee nations formed a government to help them live in peace. Today the Haudenosaunee government works hard to protect Haudenosaunee land and traditions.
