Native Americans of North America


Facts to Know:
The Northwest Coast:
1. The region of the Northwest Coast is located in the states of Utah, Washington, and Oregon.
2. The climate in the Northwest Coast was windy and rainy most of the time.
3. The Paleo-Indians were the first to inhabit the North West coast.
4. By the 1400’s, people from the hundreds of different tribes lived in the Northwest Coast.
5. The Northwest Coast had many tribes such as Haida, Paleo-Indians, Chinooks, and Makah.
The Great Plains:
1. Mandans and Kiowas were two tribes that lived in the Great Plains.
2. Mandan and Kiowa Indians speak English, Kiowa, and Siouan.
3. They lived mostly in teepees.
4. These tribes ate mostly fish, fruits, and meat.
5. The used their natural resources to make clothes, weapons, and shelter.
Middle America:
1. The Mayans had lots of architecture; they built over 100 cities of stone in Middle America.
2. Maize was the main food source for the Aztecs.
3. Aztecs carried amulets for good luck.
4. The region of Middle America includes all of Central America and Mexico; sometimes
Colombia and Venezuela is part of it too.
5. Aztec doctors used herbal remedies to cure and prevent illness.
The South West:
1. Food, jewelry, and clothes are the most important pieces of culture to the Hopi.
2. Kachina dolls were used by the Hopi Indians to bring rain.
3. Dances such as the snake and buffalo were special for the Hopi.
4. Pueblos were the houses made of adobe where the Hopi lived.
5. The Hopi people were generally a peaceful people.
The Eastern Woodlands:
1. The Cherokee territory was in the Appalachian Mountains.
2. Iroquois Indians still live in North America and follow some of the traditions from the past.
3. The first name the Cherokee were known by was Ani Yunwiya.
4. Iroquois ate fruits and vegetables, and men hunted deer and bear.
5. Longhouses were long wooden structures in which several Iroquois families lived.
