The venue for the Symposium in Leeds Trinity university College (please note this is the same venue as in previous years, but the name of the College has changed). Full details about the venue and how to find it are available on the Symposium website. Leeds Trinity University College is an independent University College offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees accredited by the University of Leeds. Leeds Trinity is located north west of Leeds City Centre, some 20 minutes drive by car, in a town called Horsforth. It offers excellent conference facilities and accommodation in a relaxed and pleasant environment. The outstanding attendance of a truly international flavour at each Symposium has confirmed the wider value of the meetings. The social occasions, as well as the technical sessions, of each Symposium have fostered lasting relationships which benefit the individuals and the subject of tribology. Each meeting has commenced with a Symposium Dinner before the main technical sessions and each has included an extended visit to a local place of interest.

The Dowson Prize is awarded to the best paper and presentation by a registered research student, or someone within 3 years of graduation from a research degree, at the Symposium when held in Leeds, as judged by a panel drawn from the Symposium organisers. The prize was first offered in 2008 in honour of the lifetime achievements of Duncan Dowson and to inspire and reward outstanding tribologists in the early stages of their careers. It essentially mirrors the remit of the Maurice Godet Award presented when the Symposium is hosted in Lyon.

39th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology Great Challenges in Tribology

Tuesday 4th Friday 7th September 2012

For this Symposium, we invite researchers and practitioners in tribology to identify the great challenges that they face in their particular domains and how they are tackling the problems presented. The difficulties may relate to deficiencies in the underlying science or in the nature of specific application areas. Indicative subjects may include but are certainly not restricted to topics such as alternative energy generation, surface engineering, novel lubricants, manufacturing processes and health.

The Proceedings of the Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology were published in book form from the launch of the Symposia in 1974 until the 31st Symposium held in Leeds in 2004. The Proceedings of these Research Symposia have found their place in many a library and have proved to be valuable sources of reference to developing aspects of tribology. However, quite different arrangements came into force in 2005 with two leading Publishers to disseminate contributions to the Leeds-Lyon Symposia in Special Issues of refereed Journals of international repute. This scheme offers greater visibility for research papers presented at the Symposia, full recognition as contributions to peer reviewed Journals and electronic access. Martin priest, Jost Chair of Engineering Tribology Chairman of the 39th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology This Symposia series is jointly sponsored by the University of Leeds and the Institut National des Sciences Appliques (INSA) de Lyon, Universit de Lyon. The inaugural Symposium was held in 1974 and since then there has been an annual meeting in the month of September, the sponsoring Institutions acting as hosts on alternate occasions. After 38 successful events, the Symposium has become an established event in the international tribology calendar. Each year the Symposium provides an opportunity for the discussion of the current understanding of the recent work on a particular aspect of tribology. An important aspect is the opportunity afforded to tribologists and those working in related fields to meet annually not only to discuss the particular topic chosen, but also to exchange views and ideas on a broader basis.

Since its introduction in 1966, the word tribology has been accepted and utilised to very different extents in the industrialised countries of the world.
Some nations have developed specific societies and institutions with tribology in the title, whilst in others it has been integrated into existing structures and is barely visible. However, what is consistent across the world is the way in which tribology has become deeply embedded in science, engineering, design, manufacture and life cycle management across a huge range of application areas. As such we can now regard tribology as a mature scientific and engineering discipline. This maturity and integration is very satisfying to those who have championed the subject but it also hinders the identification of the future directions for tribology as a distinct entity. Attend any international conference on tribology today and the breadth of the topics covered and the people involved is breathtaking. It is, however, implicit that tribology intrinsically has a major role to play in the future development of global industry and society as we will always need to control friction and wear.
