KAHL Process Technology for Waste Tyre Recycling

At present, approx. 2.5 million tons of waste tyres are produced in Europe every year. So far they are mainly used as fuel additives in cement factories and power stations. As an alternative to the traditional tyre size-reduction processes using nitrogen the hot-grinding process developed by Amandus Kahl is economically viable for grinding waste tyres without the use of nitrogen to a metal- and fabric-free granulate of < 0.5 to 6 mm in size. The system is designed for a plant capacity of 2.5 t/h (per granulation press) in three-shift operation.

Advantages Low operating costs Long service life of tools > 1000 h Low maintenance requirements Efficient granulation with only one flat die pelleting press Constant high throughput capacity throughout the whole service life of the tools No waste products Constant high product quality Primary crushing The supplied tyres are cut to a chip size of 50 x 50 mm. The tyre chips are conveyed into the core component of the plant, the rubber grinding unit.

Granulation Here, the tyre parts are ground in a Kahl flat die pelleting press. The pelleting press (type 60-1250), with a drive power of 2 x 160 kW is used for granulating the tyre particles to a size < 20 mm. Oversize particles > 8 mm are returned to the granulation unit. Other particle size distributions are possible. Iron treatment The iron fraction is separated into iron/rubber compounds and exposed iron wires by means of magnets and screens. The compounds are returned to the granulation unit. For the (separated) wires with a purity of > 97 % prices of up to 100 /t are achieved.
