1) a. A 5 A re-wireble fuse and a 6 A mcb are connected in series in a circuit. Which device will operate first in the event of a short circuit? Give reasons for your answer. b. Give the new colour code for a two wire single phase and a four wire three phase system. Which colour is used for the earth wire? c. Give standard symbols for the following. Electricity meter, 5 A socket outlet, Twin fluorescent lamp, Ceiling fan, One way switch, Distribution board, Electric bell, Circuit breaker, fuse, Bell push. 2) A two-pole dc motor has eight rotor coils and four turns per coil. The flux per pole in this machine is 0.0125 Wb. a. If this motor is connected to a 12V battery, calculate the no-load speed of the motor. b. If this motor is loaded so that it consumes 50 W from the battery, calculate the induced torque of the motor. (Ignore any internal resistance in the motor.) 3) A 7.5 hp 120 V series dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 and a field resistance of 0.16 . At full load, the input current is 58 A, at the rated speed of 1050 r/min. The core losses are 200 W, and the mechanical losses are 240 W at full load. Assume that the mechanical losses vary proportionally to the cube of the speed of the motor and that the core losses are constant. Calculate the speed and efficiency of the motor if it is operating at an armature current of 35 A. 4) a. Define the total harmonic distortion of a non-linear circuit. b. In a certain non-linear circuit, the supply voltage and the corresponding current have the waveforms given by; V(t) = 350sin(t) + 50 sin (3t + 7/6) Volts and i(t) = 14sin(t - /6) + 5sin(3t + 2/3) + sin(5t - /6) Amps Determine; i. The active power supplied by the source. ii. Overall rms value, and rms value of the fundamental of the voltage. iii. Total-harmonic-distortion of the current. 1 of 1
