Can gases from yeast be used to blow up a balloon?

Yes, because the pressure from the gas will blow up the balloon.

y 1 pack of dried yeast y Teaspoon y Sugar y Warm water

y Clear plastic bottle y 1 or more balloons y Large bowl

1. Pour the packet of dried yeast into a clear plastic bottle. 2. Add some warm water to the bottle so that the bottle is about filled. 3. Add a teaspoon of sugar to the bottle and swirl the bottle around.

4. Place the balloon over the mouth of the bottle so that it s fully covered and there are no leaks. 5. Place the bottle with the balloon on it into a large bowl of warm water.

The balloon magically blows itself up. The sugar and warm water added to the yeast, makes the yeast grows and produces a gas called carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide has no choice but to rise to the top of the bottle blowing up the balloon.

I found out from my project that the pressure from the yeast is a gas called carbon dioxide and it does magically blow up balloons.

Do you think a whole lemon or a cut-up lemon will float in water?

A whole lemon will float because it is heavy; whereas, a cut-up lemon is lighter so it will sink.

2 lemons Warm water Knife Cutting board Bowl

1. Take one of the lemons and cut it into 4 pieces. 2. Fill the bowl with water so it s ths about 3/4 full. 3. Place the whole lemon into the water and watch what happens.

4. Remove the whole lemon from the bowl. 5. Place the lemon pieces individually into the water and watch what happens.

The lemon floats, no matter if it is whole or cut-up. This is because the skin of the lemon is waterproof which is helping it float in the water.

I learned from my project that a lemon does not float because it is heavy; it floats because the skin of the lemon is waterproof.
