I just want to introduce the next area well cover: the food chain. Food chains are divided into three types. The first one is the predator( [predt(r)]: dong vat an thit) chain, in which larger animals feed on smaller ones, such as when a bird eats a fish. The second is the parasite chain, in which smaller animals live off larger ones, such as a tapeworm living in a eats intestines. And the third type is the saprophytic chain in which a micro-organism feeds off dead matter. In each type of chain, potential energy is lost at each level. Lets take the example of a green plant. It gets energy from the sun by photosynthesis, but can use only about 2 or 3 percent of the energy that falls on it. The plant is then eaten by a rabbit, but the rabbit can use only about 10 percent of the potential energy of the plant. The rabbit is then eaten by a fox, which can use about 12 - 15 percent of the energy from the rabbit. And finally, the fox is eaten by a mountain lion. As you can see, at each step the percentage of energy obtained increases, but all in all, a great deal of energy is lost at each step. Thats all for today. Read the next chapter in your books. Well go on with more about the food chain next time. 76. What is the major topic of this lecture? A Predators in the animal world. B Divisions of the food chain. C The loss of potential energy in predators. D A parasitic chain. 77. Which of the following is an example of a predator chain? A. A bird eating a fish. B A rabbit eating grass. C A tapeworm living in an animal. D A plant using energy from the sun, 78. How much of the potential energy from the sun can a plant use? A 2 - 3 percent. B 10 percent. C 12 - 15 percent. D More than 15 percent. 79. What happens at each step of the food chain? A. A plant uses energy. B Animals kill other animals. C Potential energy is lost. D A micro-organism feeds off dead matter. 80. What is eaten in a saprophytic chain? A. A green plant. B Dead matter. C A smaller animal. D A rabbit.

The hospital let me have a few days holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me. We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning, and left camp with two elephants carrying our equipment. It was hot but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants' backs to get better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day. Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept nearer and found a dead deer, still bleeding. This was the tiger's lunch! Suddenly I started to feel very frightened. We heard the tiger a second before we saw it. It jumped out like a flash of lightning, five hundred kilos plus and four meters long. I looked into its eyes and face, and saw right down the animal's throat. It grabbed Kamal's leg between its teeth, but I managed to pul1 Kamal away. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the environment. Recycling means finding was to use products a second time. The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers. empty the bottles, they return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks collect the bottles, wash them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles. The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and used again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one aluminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they help save one of the world's precious resources. 76. What is the main topic of the passage? They study their own language, mathematics and English. In England, America or Australia, many boys and girls study their own language, which is English and another language, perhaps French, German or Spanish. Many adults learn English because it is useful for their work. Teenagers often learn English for their higher studies because some of their books are in English at the college or university. Other people learn English because they want to read newspapers or magazines in English. 86. According to the writer A. English is useful only to adults B. no children like learning English 87. Now, however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes. Although a dophin lives in the sea, it is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a human being. Dolphins have simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If the man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can understand. Dolphins are also very friendly towards man. They often follow ships. There are many stories of dolphins guiding ships through difficult and

A baby learns his native tongue naturally by hearing speech around him. If the speech he hears is rapid, not clear and never directed at him then he learns slowly and speaks badly. A child of two or three who cant make his desires known or put his thoughts into words will usually become angry. His relationships with other get worse. If the speech a baby hears around him is clear, and his family talk to him, he will gain a satisfactory command of language directly, by his mother, his language ability will be greater. By the time he is two, it is quite possible for him to have a vocabulary of two thousand words and by the time he is three he will be able to read. Once ahead he will stay ahead. 86. This not only provided more abundant food but also allowed more people to live on a smaller plot of ground. We tend to forget that all of our present-day pets, livestock, and food plants were taken from the wild and developed into the forms we know today. As centuries passed and human cultures evolved and blossomed, humans began to organise their knowledge of nature into the broad field of natural history. One aspect of early natural history concerned the use of plants for drugs and medicine. The early herbalists sometimes overworked their imaginations in this respect. For example, it was widely believed that a plant or part of a plant that resembles an internal organ would cure ailments of that organ, Thus, an extract made from a heart-shaped leaf might be prescribed for a person suffering from heart problems. Nevertheless, the overall contributions of these early observers provided the rudiments of our present knowledge of drugs and their uses. 46. What does this passage mainly discuss? A. Interpreting is not only a mechanical process of converting one sentence in language A into the same sentence in language B. Rather, its a complex art in which thoughts and idioms that have no obvious counterparts from tongue to tongue _ or words that have several meanings must be quickly transformed in such a way that the message is clearly and accurately expressed to the listener. At one international conference, an American speaker said, You cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear, which meant nothing to the Spanish audience. The interpretation was, A monkey in a silk dress is still a monkey _ an idiom the Spanish understood and that expressed the same idea. There are 2 kinds of interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive. The former, sitting in a separated booth, usually at a large multilingual conference, speaks to listeners wearing headphones, interpreting what a foreign language speaker says _ actually a sentence behind. Consecutive interpreters are the ones most international negotiations use. They are employed for smaller meetings without sound booths and headphones. Consecutive interpretation also requires two-person teams. A foreign speaker says his piece while the interpreter, using a special shorthand, takes notes and during a pause, tells the client what was said. 56. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To explain the scope of interpreting. B. To differentiate between simultaneous and consecutive interpreters. C. To state the qualifications of an interpreter. D. Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the dominant language of international communication. English as we know it today emerged around 1350, after having incorporated many elements of French that were introduced following the Norman invasion of 1066. Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had not extended even as far as two centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of exploration, trade (including slave trade), colonization, and missionary work. Thus, small enclaves of English speakers became established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities proliferated, English gradually became the primary language of international business, banking and diplomacy. Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is English. Two - thirds of the worlds science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology, advertising, media, international airports, and air traffic controllers - Today there are more than 700 million English users in the world, and over half of these are nonnative speakers, constituting the largest number of nonnative users than any other language in the world. 61. The fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are dissolved in fats, as their name implies. Good source of these vitamins have high oil or fat content, and the vitamins are stored in the bodys fatty tissues. In the diet, fats cause food to remain longer in the stomach, thus increasing the feeling of fullness for some time after a meal is eaten. Fats add variety, taste and texture to foods, which accounts for the popularity of fried foods. Fatty deposits in body have an insulating and protective value. The curves of the human female body are due mostly to strategically located fat deposits. Whether a certain amount of fat in the diet is essential to human health is not definitely known. When rats are fed a fat-free diet, their growth eventually ceases, their skin becomes inflamed and scaly and their reproductive systems are damaged. Two fatty acids, linoleic and arachidonic acids, prevent these abnormalities and hence are called essential fatty acids. Read the passage and choose the best answer. English has had a long tradition of borrowing words from other languages. This tradition began with the conquest of Britain by the Norman-French in 1066. Because these conquerors established themselves as rulers, their dialect of French became the language of the aristocracy, of government, and of education. During this period, many French words came into the English language. Another strong influx of vocabulary came from Latin, which was the language of the church Today, those words derived from French and Latin, though still identifiable, are not thought of as foreign by English speakers. Tradition, language and conquest are words that come to us from this tradition. The British colonial era, which began in the early 17l century, brought English speakers into contact with many other languages. In North America, words from the Native American peoples quickly found their ways into the language Examples include moccasin (a kind of soft shoe), squash (a vegetable) The presence of Spanish colonies in North America led to the adoption of numerous Spanish words, such as siesta (a nap) and tortilla (a flat thin pancake). Asian languages also make contributions. For example, the word pyjamas comes from a Hindi word, khaki comes from Urdu, and ketchup was borrowed from Chinese. Words from African languages, too, made their ways into English when African slaves served in the United States. The result of all of this absorption of new words is a very rich vocabulary that allows users of English to express subtlety of meaning through their choice of words. 61. Many French words came into the English language when A French traders did business with the British. B the Norman-French conquered Britain. C British people ruled France in early 17th century. D African slaves worked in Great Britain. 62. Tradition, languages and conquest are examples of A borrowed words no longer considered foreign. B words borrowed from Latin. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 46 to 55. A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the world's largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat from the earth's core. The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid temperatures on the surface. The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial survey of the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of water of indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar detected an extremely flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake. The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the scientific community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organisms in more exposed areas. The downside of the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are looking for possible ways to accomplish this. Question 46: The word "hidden" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to A. undrinkable B. untouched C. unexploitable D. undiscovered Question 47: What is true of Lake Vostok? A. Perhaps the most striking quality of satiric literature is its freshness and its originality of perspective. Satire itself, however, rarely offers original ideas. Instead, it presents the familiar in a new form. Satirists do not offer the world new philosophies. What they do is look at familiar conditions from a perspective that makes these conditions seem foolish, harmful, or affected. Satire jars us out of complacence into a pleasantly shocked realization that many of the values we unquestioningly accept are false. Don Quixote makes chivalry seem absurd; Brave New World ridicules the pretensions of science; A Modest Proposal dramatizes starvation by advocating cannibalism. None of these ideas is original. Chivalry was suspect before Cervantes, humanists objected to the claims of pure science before Aldous Huxley, and people were aware of famine before Swift.

60

15 thi i hc Anh vn Su tm bi nhox_dd It was not the originality of the idea that made these satires popular. It was the manner of expression, the satiric method, that made them interesting and entertaining. Satires are read because they are aesthetically satisfying works of art, not because they are morally wholesome or ethically instructive. They are stimulating and refreshing because with commonsense briskness they brush away illusions and secondhand opinions. With spontaneous irreverence, satire rearranges perspectives, scrambles familiar objects into incongruous juxtaposition, and speaks in a personal idiom instead of abstract platitude. Satire exists because there is need for it. It has lived because readers appreciate a refreshing stimulus, an irreverent reminder that they live in a world of platitudinous thinking, cheap moralizing, and foolish philosophy. Satire serves to prod people into an awareness of truth, though rarely to any action on behalf of truth. Satire tends to remind people that much of what they see, hear, and read in popular media is sanctimonious, sentimental, and only partially true. Life resembles in only a slight degree the popular image of it. Question 56: What does the passage mainly discuss? A. Difficulties of writing satiric literature. B. Popular topics of satire. C. First, we ought to visit our dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right way. Unfortunately, many people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist. Secondly, we should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, once after breakfast and once before we go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a meal. Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk, cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice, vegetables and fresh fruit. Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we eat them between meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay. 81.
