How one highflyer completely rethought her work and family life, and how doing it differently could work for all of us.
For families everywhere, it remains the ultimate dilemma: how to balance a happy, healthy family life with the demands and rewards of work. For Gaby Hinsliff, then Political Editor of The Observer, the only solution was to quit and start with a blank sheet of paper. What Hinsliff finds is that overstretched working parents need half a wife someone who can spend the equivalent of a couple of working days a week focused mainly on home and family (and that someone definitely doesnt need to be a woman). Arguing that men are too often pushed out of the family debate, she looks at family life as a whole rather than separate individuals, describing the emerging daddy wars between men with very different ideas of fatherhood and the price paid within marriages when work and family life are at odds. It is essential and optimistic reading for anyone who feels the visceral pull of home, but also the lure of meaningful work.

the Sense of an Ending

Julian Barnes

As I was Saying
Robert Dessaix

Winner of the Man Booker prize, this is a brilliant novel from a writer at the very height of his powers.
Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sexhungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is in middle age. Hes had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. Hes certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyers letter is about to prove. The Sense of an Ending is the story of one man coming to terms with the mutable past. Laced with trademark precision, dexterity and insight, it is the work of one of the worlds most distinguished writers.

A collection of musings.
As I was Saying is a swirling conversation with the reader on everything from travel to dogs and cats, from sport and swearing to the pleasures of idleness. Punctuated at regular intervals by talks Dessaix has given on a wide range of subjects, as well as by some of his most incisive journalism, the conversation invites the reader to join a leisurely guided tour of his chamber of curiosities, featuring pieces collected all over the globe from across the centuries.

Now, for the first time, Auggie is being sent to a real school and hes dreading it. The thing is, Auggies just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that hes just like them, underneath it all? Through the voices of Auggie, his big sister Via, and his new friends Jack and Summer, Wonder follows Auggies journey through his first year at Beecher Prep. I know Im not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an Xbox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids dont make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids dont get stared at wherever they go.

A crossover, word-of-mouth sensation in the tradition of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
