InterAction mourns humanitarian champion Rep. Donald Payne

WASHINGTON (March 7, 2012)Yesterday, the InterAction community lost a great friend and champion with the passing of Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), who died of colon cancer. He was 77 years old. In 2008, Rep. Payne was awarded the InterAction Congressional Service Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership in Congress on international development and humanitarian issues. He was also recognized for his extraordinary efforts on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittee for Africa and Global Health in furthering African development, promoting the health of women and girls, and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. Representative Payne was a shining beacon for the worlds most vulnerable and marginalized people. We will miss his valiant efforts to resolve challenging humanitarian and development issues, said Samuel A. Worthington, president and CEO of InterAction. He had a tremendous impact on the lives of those who often do not have a voice. Representative Payne was their advocate. InterAction and its 197 member organizations extend our sincere condolences to the family of Rep. Payne, his many friends and colleagues both in Congress and around the world.
