LCCS 2010 Awards Banquet Members of Lewis County Composite Squadron gathered at the Bethel Church in Chehalis on January 23rd, 2010. A large crowd attended and we were honored to have Col Paul Grover as the Guest of Honor. Before the banquet began, a POW/MIA remembrance table ceremony was led by C/1st Lt Eric Tibbits and C/2d Lt Jonathan Peterson. After a delicious meal, the promotions and awards were presented. The promotions were as follows: Cadet Shane Voorhis was promoted from Cadet Basic to C/Amn. Promoting from C/Amn to C/A1C were Cadets Campbell Dollarhyde, Griffyn Dollarhyde, Ayla Griffith, Jeremiah Oster, and Cody Soldan. Cadet Ellen Lamphere promoted from C/A1C to C/SrA Cadet Nik Steele received his promotion to C/SSgt and both he and Cadet Jordan Barlow received their Wright Brothers Award. Cadets Cheyenne Sibitzky and Timothy Sizemore promoted from C/SSgt to C/TSgt.

Cadet Kayla Hughes promoted from C/SMSgt to C/CMSgt and Cadet Eric Tibbits promoted from C/2d Lt to C/1st Lt. Next, the yearly awards were presented. The Rising Star Award is given to the new cadet and senior member who has shown the most effort and progress during their first year as a member of CAP. The cadet award was presented to C/SrA Bryce Carlson and the senior award went to 2d Lt Ted Denton. Military bearing is important to being a member of CAP. The Righteous award is given to the cadet and senior who exhibits superior military bearing including a sharp uniform and respectful demeanor. The cadet who received this award was C/ TSgt Timothy Sizemore and the senior was Capt Gil White. LCCS has long held the tradition that all members give 110% effort in everything they do. The 110% Award signifies the cadet and senior who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. The cadet who received this award was C/ MSgt Jordan Bell and the Senior was Capt Bill Tibbits. Next came the High Flight Award. This award is given to the cadet and Senior

who have shown through consistent achievement and effort, the highest standard of excellence in aerospace activity. The cadet who earned this award was C/1st Lt Eric Tibbits and the senior was Capt John Pope. Emergency Services is what CAP is very well known for, especially in Lewis County. LCCS not only trains its members in the field of ES, but they also work with the Sheriffs office in SAR events. The cadet who earned the ES Pathfinder Award was C/SSgt Zach Hail and the senior was Capt Dan Whalen. Finally was the Cadet of the Year Award. C/CMSgt Kayla Hughes was selected by her peers and senior members alike as the cadet who performed in a consistent and outstanding manner.

Another award was presented that was not one of the LCCS awards, but came instead from the Air Force Association (AFA). The AFA Cadet of the Year was presented to C/1st Lt Eric Tibbits. Our guest of honor, Col Gruver, spoke to us about perseverance and urged us to use our training, knowledge and experience to perform our duties to best of our abilities. Colonel Gruver is the Commander (CC) of the Western Air Defense Sector (Air Combat Command), McChord Air Force Base, Washington. As Commander, he is responsible for peacetime air sovereignty and wartime air defense of the western half of the Continental United States. Col Gruver assumed the duties of WADS Commander on 02 June 2006 after serving as Vice Commander of WADS since 2005. The evening allowed cadets, seniors, and parents to socialize and honor the members who have excelled in the work that they did throughout 2009. Lewis County Composite Squadron has as its motto, 110 percent, all the way. The awards banquet was meant as a celebration of the motto put into action.

Congratulations Major Corder! This has been an eventful month for Major Eric Corder. As a member of the United States Air Force, he has been promoted from Captain at an exceptionally young age. In fact, Col Gruver used that promotion as an example in his Awards Banquet speech as the way one should work and persevere toward a goal. Major Corder was also presented with an award by the Lewis County Sheriffs office for his outstanding participation with the LCCS Civil Air Patrol. We are honored to have him as a member of our squadron!

Fabulous Field Trip Alert!

The squadron will be participating in a field trip on 22-23 May that will begin immediately after drill with an afternoon and overnight on the Warship Turner Joy in Bremerton. On Sunday morning, the attendees will continue on to Keystone where they will be visiting the Underwater Warfare Museum. The price of the field trip will be covered for the most part by the squadron with the cadet being responsible for only $25 of the total cost. The $25 must be pre-paid at by May 7th so reservations for the Turner Joy can be made. This cost will cover both dinner and breakfast on the warship. Each cadet must also bring at least $5 to pay for lunch on Sunday afternoon and perhaps some extra for the gift shops. A packing list will be given to cadets in the weeks before the field trip. So put the weekend of 22-23 May on your calendar and be prepared to have a weekend full of fun. Sign up on the LCCS website now!

Scholarship Information
Lewis County Composite Squadron wants you to participate in as many events as you desire, but sometimes, it is hard for you to financially participate in all the events you would like to attend. Every year, there are several fund-raisers that the squadron puts on for raising the money to help cadets pay for local encampments, BMEs, national encampments, and other events. You are expected to participate in these fund-raisers so that when you are in a position to need financial help, it will be available for you. Whether the fund-raiser is selling flower bowls, the STP baggage handling, calendars, or donuts, every cadet is expected to participate. When a scholarship is given to you, the money is presented after the event is finished. You will need to prepay for the event and send in a scholarship request form (found on the squadron website) and a letter that specifically requests the scholarship. The letter should be correctly addressed and include the event name, date, price, and a short paragraph stating why you would like to attend. The scholarship form is located on the squadron website. The request must be mailed to the squadron before the event takes place. Usually, if the scholarship is approved and if the funds are available, the squadron will pay for one third of the cost. Approval of the scholarship may be affected by a cadets participation in fund raisers. You may apply to the squadrons booster club, A.S.H., for a scholarship, as well. When the funds are available, they try to provide a third of the cost which, when added to the squadron scholarship, reimburses you for two thirds of the cost. Occasionally, there will be times when a family has multiple cadets attending an expensive encampment or a cadet is in a financial situation that makes it impossible for him or her to pay up front. If money is an issue, please talk to the DSCC or the Commander. Bottom Line: Lewis County Composite Squadron relies on teamwork. Everyone works together to get the funds to help and then when an individual needs help we are there to provide it.

9-11 April - Spring Conference in Wenatchee. This is a great time to learn more about CAP by taking classes and to get to know other cadets from around the state. 7 - 9 May - We are expecting to have a Basic Cadet Training School sometime in May. This is a weekend that all cadets are expected to attend. There will be an opportunity for everyone to work on their next promotion, so stay tuned for more information. 22 - 23 Maysee page three of this newsletter for field trip information. It is sure to be a fun time. 4 - 6 June - We are planning another Basic Marksmanship Encampment. Registration is open for LCCS cadets only at this time. Be aware that when it is opened to the entire Wing (around April 8th), the event is usually filled within hours, if not minutes. So do not hesitate to get registered if you wish to attend. You will need to register online and get your paperwork and money in as soon as possible! There is a deadline for paperwork (May 5th), so be sure you dont lose your slot. Be sure to check the website on a regular basis to find out about upcoming events, calling tree, and a multitude of other great resources.
