6718 REGINA OKEKE

Psycho Alfred Hitchcock 1960

The words are fragmented and broken up, this could symbolise the fragmentation of the psyche of the individuals after their minds have been manipulated, causing discomfort within the audience and beginning the manipulation of the minds of the audience.

Use of Titles

The words slide in from different directions of the screen. Commonly in psychological thriller films, the director wants to show the audience although there is good, there is also an opposing side, which is dark and evil in everyone.

The title sequence is all in black and white including shades of grey. This is purposefully done to show everything isn't just black and white within the storyline of a psychological thriller, instead there is an alternative conclusion which causes confusion within the plot; and this is represented through the shades of grey running across the black and white.

The title sequence is in black and white to also represent the different characters in the film. White signifies innocence, while black signifies darkness and evil. The use of grey is significant for psychological thriller films as the colour is a mix of black and white symbolising a character who is perhaps both evil and innocent; charcters like this are common in thriller films.

Use of Sound

The genre of thriller films usually use strings in minor key to create anxiety within the audience and to also cause discomfort. This reflects the genre of a psychological thriller as the sounds like the villain invades the psyche of the victim and the audience, manipulating their minds to change their emotions.

No lyrics give no clue into what is going to happen leaving the audience in a position of disillusion and feeling on edge. This reflects the genre of psychological thriller as commonly the villain does little; to provoke the victim physically instead mentally they manipulate the mind to allow the victim to create fear within themselves.

The non-digetic music is loud, the piercing violins sound strained and the dissonance of chords and notes create anxiety and panic within the audience.
