the east coast. The site is quite long so
the placing of the buildings tries to give
an institutional feel while also achieving a
variety of scales to the various blocks. The
district police station forms a portal with
the workers housing and sits on a public
plaza where the entrance, a four-storey
glass box, is intended as an extension of
the plaza.
Shelford Suites Condominium in
Singapore is a project calling for a large
number of small units with three
bedrooms each to cater for families with
school age children. For this development,
New Space based the architecture of
the building on linear forms with
transparent planes contrasting a series of
horizontal boxes oating on a box of
granite and glass.
New Spaces fourth award-winning
architectural project is a bungalow on the
resort island of Sentosa Cove in Singapore,
a master-planned enclave of high-end
bungalows and condominiums. It is
composed of two volumes, separated by a
swimming pool in the centre and an open-
air atrium. The larger volume contains all
the major living spaces while the smaller
one houses a kitchen at ground level and a
study on the second oor. The two
volumes are joined by bridges and all
vertical movement is provided by a series
of steps, bridges and a lift. The
arrangement of the volumes with its open-
air atrium and cross ventilation ensures
that natural sea breezes ow through
house and obviates the need for any air-
conditioning. All major rooms have a view
out to the South China sea.

The rst of Aedas two award-
winning residential projects in Vietnam is
New Pearl Apartments in the heart of
the historic Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street in
District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, This street is
also home to the Reunication Palace, a

war. When complete, the development
will stand 18 storeys tall and house 120

local Vietnam market.
Phu My Metropolis Central is the
second award-winning project in
Vietnam for Aedas. This mixed-use
development will become the new
symbol for a modern living standard in
the capital city of Hanoi and set a new
benchmark for regional development.
Equal attention has been given to
all building components with the
towers featuring the residential
apartments and the podium housing the
commercial, retail and entertainment
areas. Interest has been created by
using three different residential tower
forms where massing and height are
varied to give the development direction
and focus.
Two high-rise towers mark the main
entrance and ceremonial plaza; the
towers are vertical with the building
massing eroded at the top in a spiral
fashion exposing the buildings circulation
core. The core itself is wrapped in
translucent glass which is back lit to
create a lantern or beacon signalling the
presence of the development within the
Hanoi skyline.
Restricted by the sites available
space, the podium sits below and
between the linear residential buildings.

reminiscent of the atrium space existing
in traditional Vietnamese townhouses.
The atrium is surrounded by living space
and so also gives maximum light and
ventilation to the heart of the
development. This urban atrium space
provides residents with a peaceful oasis
in the centre of a thriving development
and city, while the podium garden
provides a comfortable and natural
environment for leisure activities
immediately on their doorstep.
Aedas also won awards for two of
its projects in China. North Star,
Beijing is a mixed-use development
located on the fth ring of the city, close
to the Olympic park area. The
development is within a larger master
plan, to the west is a large leisure park
and other cultural facilities, while to the
east are the main streets and a new
subway station. Given this prime location,
the project serves as an anchor to the
master plan and links directly to the
Beijing transit network.
The design of North Star could be
seen as being similar to water owing
between two rocks. The two commercial
towers, The Rocks, anchor each side
and natural movement of the retail
podium is caught between them. Daylight
pours through skylights between the
towers, highlighting entrances to the
north, south and west sides of the site.
This undulating skylights acts like water
ow, bringing energy to the mall below
and enriching the internal space with a
feeling of nature.
The two 25-storey high towers are
situated on top of a seven-storey mega
retail podium, Designed as a retail
experience where people can sit and
relax apart from simply doing their
shopping, Circulation paths inside the
mall are planned like an artery system
inside an organic body, similar to water
owing down a stream. Externally the
different oor plates create terraces and
stepped landscapes for sitting and
enjoying the surrounding environment.

Aedas architectural design for the
Pazhou Exhibition Center in Guangzhou,
China would have already been
considered a challenge due to its four
distinct uses being split between two
sites. However, the complexity becomes
even greater because the sites are
separated by 160 metres occupied by
another building.
The centre-piece of the
development is a government funded
exhibition centre which currently ranks
as the second largest in the world.
Pazhou is an island within the Pearl River
which is dedicated to exhibition related
activities. Due to this and the fact that
the Pazhou Exhibition Complex is
located directly across the street from
this new facility, the centre needs to be
highly competitive to ensure its success.
One of the two sites contains a large
retail exhibition area in the podium and a
large ofce showroom building on top.
The second site is a traditional, multi-
oor exhibition centre in the podium
with a 500 room, ve-star hotel located
above. Already proving a winning
combination, the introduction of four
primary uses helps to diversify the centre
and create a mixed-use vibrancy which
allows the business model a stronger
likelihood of success.

customisation. The main living spaces
living, dining and bedrooms are
oriented towards the views, while
kitchens and service areas are positioned
in the apartment interior.
Another award-winning project from
Axis is the Parvis at Holland Hill sales
gallery, a sleek modern space organised
along a central circulation spine with
seating and service areas branching off to
the left and right. Different oor nishes
carpet tiles, laminates and polished granite
aid the clear demarcation of spatial
functions, while subdued downlights evoke
a chic art gallery-like feel.
The showat stands in sharp contrast
to the sales gallery, its disposition one of
baroque opulence rather than
streamlined simplicity. Rich accent colours
like gold, crimson, imperial yellow and
royal blue impart an air of exclusivity
while mirrors enhance the space.
Living, dining and balcony are read as
a continuous, uid space ideally suited for
entertaining. Accentuate this particularity
is a ceiling recess with strips of cove
lighting. A section of wall in the dining is
clad with three mirrored panels,
effectively doubling the volume of the
space. Thick drapes with borders part to
reveal the stunning centrepiece the
view of the city skyline in the distance.
Unique headboard designs
characterise the master bedroom and
two other bedrooms. The master room
features a quilted fabric headboard with
mirror trim; bedroom two has inset
backlit panels embellished with circular
motifs; and bedroom three employs
generous spans of mirror to enhance the
sense of spaciousness. A highlight of the
study room is the oor-to-ceiling trompe
loeil wallpaper with a bookshelf pattern;
the actual bookshelf is no less unique,
with a dramatic backlit design.
The interior design of two adjoining
restaurants, Naan and Kozan, also won
award-winning status. Naan seeks a
departure from traditional notions of an
Indian restaurant. Rather than layer the
space with an overdose of motifs and

the Axis team approached the project
with the intention of expressing the
avours of India within a modern setting.
Kozan on the other hand, echoes the
minimalist aesthetic of a classical
Japanese teppanyaki restaurant but
unique architectural details and
unconventional material nishes give it a
modern edge.
The arrival experience is dramatised
by the use of softly glowing lanterns
which are positioned at regular intervals
on the perimeter of the outdoor dining
area. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls partition
the indoor and outdoor spaces, providing
indoor diners with expansive views of the
outdoor setting and beachfront.
Flanked by the entrances to Naan
and Kozan, the maitre d reception is
treated as a neutral space and serves
to direct diners towards either
restaurant. Specially designed restaurant
logos act as beacons. The Naan logo is
inspired by the shape of a peacock
feather, Indias national bird, and this
motif is repeated in the interior on
dividing screens. Meanwhile the Kozan
logo is expressed as a calligraphic symbol
of Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asias
highest mountain and the citys most
recognisable icon.
