Lab Report Measurement of e/m 02/14/2012 Keith McKinzie

Lab Partners: Keith McKinzie, Petro Khoma, Mark Hoppel Hypothesis or Objective: What is an accurate way to measure the charge to mass ratio of an electron? Equipment: CENCO E/M apparatus CENCO discharge tube power supply Leads Small, thin plastic ruler

Procedure: See attached Data: See attached Analysis: See attached Conclusion: According to the analysis, this method was not very accurate, because it resulted in an error of about 40%. This error could be from an error in the procedure, where the beam was not focused enough, resulting in a different distance. Also, the rings were in set increments, that resulted in fewer

measurements, and a lower overall accuracy, because the current could only be raised to a maximum of 5A.
