Swim Australias national chief executive ocer Ross Gage this week said that Premier Anna Blighs $77.4 million, three-year Water Babies plan would add another layer to the protection oered by pool fencing. Queenslanders access to swimming lessons and enable the children who are already enrolled the opportunity to continue lessons. The rising cost of living has meant that some families had not been able to aord extracurricular activities, she said. But learning to swim is a necessary life skill. It can save lives! Ms Ward addded that, like any new skill, it takes time to master and she said it may require additional lessons for kids to become water-safe. What do think of Annas Water Babies plan? Childrens author and teacher Jayneen Sanders has approached a sensitive subject with empathy and creativity in her latest book.

TEACHER Jayneen Sanders has written the beautifully illustrated book entitled Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept which sensitively broaches the subject of keeping our children safe from sexual interference. We teach water safety and road safety but how to we teach body safety to young children in a way that is neither frightening nor confronting? Jayneen says. The book is an invaluable tool for parents, carers, teachers and health professionals. The book also includes discussion questions which

are an excellent support guide when talking with children about the story. Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept is suitable for ages 3 to 12 years. It is available, along with a supportive teachers pack at www.somesecrets.info As well as being a teacher, Jayneen is an author and mum of three teenage daughters. She has written many childrens books over the past 20 years and is currently the lead author of Engage Literacy a new P3 literacy series for schools.

Kates a Keeper!

THE QUEENSLAND Labor Partys MP for Ashgrove Kate Jones has had her hands particularly full lately as the state election draws near. But she found a few minutes to send us a few lines of encouragement for this, the second ediMum and MP, Kate Jones tion of KindyNews: who represents Ashgrove. It is good news that a specialised publication has started circulating in our local community designed especially for parents with toddlers. As a mother with a young child I know how little time is available to most parents seeking useable local information relevant to their family. So an extra source of easy-to-access news with a local avour both online and in hard-copy form is most welcome. I congratulate those behind Kindy News and wish it every success.
