Essay Questions:

1. Cyborg dreams: Utopia and dystopia. Discuss the positive and negative cultural and technological aspects of the cyborg metaphor in our postmodern culture. Use examples drawing from film or TV or popular culture. 2. Locative media: Location, space and the city. Describe and analyse at least two examples of Locative media projects. What sort of technologies are being used and how do these project echo ideas engendered by the Situationists (eg mapmaking, flneur, drive)? 3. New media and the postmodern loss of authorship. Find at least two examples of New Media projects / applications and explain how these blur the boundaries between author / user (producer / audience). Choose examples both from commercial and artistic sectors (i.e. websites, net.art, installations, locative media projects, games etc). 4. Hyperreality: Better then the real thing. How can the theory of hyperreality and/ or simulation be applied in computer interface design? Choose at least two examples of software (eg game) or operating system interface, outline appropriate theory, and provide an analysis in these terms.

5. Identify at least two examples of works which relate to one or two of the following topics: Locative Media Mobile Phone Culture Remediation Net Art Remix Culture Hyper-Narrative Hyperreality and Simulation Present an analysis of your findings, identify contexts for these works and discuss the audience implied by the works. Use theoretical approaches delivered in the sessions to date.
