Editors Page Staying the Course: 20112016

In this issue, we are pleased to share with you the JEE Strategic Plan, 20112016. It is the result of months of discussions with the JEE Advisory Board, the journals partners, and others interested in advancing engineering education research. We are grateful for everyones thoughtful contributions and especially the ASEE Board of Directors for their support of the plan. As you read the strategic plan, I hope you notice that it proposes to continue to advance the journal as well as to further build a global community dedicated to scholarship in engineering education which are consistent with the journals first strategic plan (20052010). However, a principal difference between the plan five years ago and now is that engineering education research was an emerging field of somewhat disparate global communities then whereas today engineering education research is an established field of inquiry with a betterconnected global community. The journals strategic plan aligns well with this emergence and cohesion and charts our course to solidify the JEE gains and accelerate its progress. The journal editors are now developing specific actions to implement the two goals and seven strategies presented in the strategic plan. We would welcome the involvement from anyone interested in joining us in our efforts or linking their efforts with ours. Because we provided a final summary report of the journals achievements with the prior strategic plan in the October 2010 issue, which also included activities that would otherwise be reported in this editorial as part of our annual report to the community, we have only three major items to report at this time. We recently launched our new Web site, www.jee.org. Check it out! Among its features are easier public access to the journals archives, links to other important engineering education research communities, and current community news. Four senior associate editors and I have assumed other important responsibilities in addition to our editorial duties: Dr. Wendy Newstetter will lead our efforts in offering influential special issues, Dr. Joseph Shaeiwitz will guide JEE in fully leveraging the power of the Web; Dr. Barbara Olds will work with our partners, and others, to offer informative faculty development workshops; Dr. Jim Pellegrino will help JEE further strengthen our relationships with the learning science communities; and I will be focused on seeking out opportunities for JEE to sponsor important engineering education research events. Under the leadership of Dr. Jeff Froyd, we will celebrate JEEs centennial year at the upcoming ASEE annual conference. There will be a special exhibit in the exhibition hall, and with the co-leadership of President Renata Engel, the main plenary will commemorate the centennial through a celebration of engineering education scholarship in its many forms. The main plenary, together with a Distinguished Lecture, will also showcase some important results from ASEEs three-year effort promote a culture of scholarly and systematic innovation in engineering education. As always, I am especially grateful to the many individuals and organizations whose counsel and contributions have helped JEE achieve its success. They include the associate

editors, the journals international partners, the JEE Advisory Board, the ASEE Board of Directors and headquarters staff, and my assistant editorand many others who have no formal role with JEE but who care deeply about its success. Among the later group are our colleagues who give generously of their time and expertise to review the journals manuscripts. Their contributions not only shape the quality of the journals articles but also the future of engineering education research through their thoughtful feedback to over 600 international authors annually. Each of the individuals listed on the following pages reviewed at least one manuscript in 2010. Thank you! Jack R. Lohmann
