Romeo & Juliet Act 3 Scene 2 Outline of notes Who & What? Juliet is alone What is she saying?

Lines 1-4: asking the horses who draw the Sun gods (Phoebus) chariot to move faster to bring night time sooner (Juliet wants the sun to set quicker and night to come). Lines 5-7: spread the (bed)curtains around us during the night when people make love. Eyes will be shut so Romeo can be in my arms unknown to everyone else. Lines 8-10: Lovers can make love in the dark because they know their beauty, or if the lovers are not beautiful then it is better to make love at night (in the dark). Lines 10-16: serious night, come with a widow to teach me how to make love and cover the virgin blood in my cheeks (blushing because she is a virgin). Make my love grow daring, so I can make love innocently and true. Lines17-19: Come nighttime and Romeo; he is my day during night because he is as white (pure) as snow against the darkness. Lines 20-25: Come night and give me my Romeo. When I die, cut Romeo into little stars (pieces) that make heaven (the night sky) so beautiful that everyone will love the nighttime and forget the sun. Lines 26-28: I married Romeo, but have not had him; he owns me, but has not taken me yet. Lines 28-31: This day feels as long as a day before a party when a child is not allowed to wear their new clothes until then. Who & What? Nurse enters with ropes for a ladder

Juliet: the Nurse brings information about Romeo and everyone who speaks Romeos name speaks beautifully. Are those the ropes Romeo told you to get? Nurse: Yes, the ropes. [throws them down; showing shes angry] Juliet: What happened? Why are you upset? Nurse: Oh no! Hes dead! We are in trouble! Curse this day, hes killed, he is dead! Juliet: Can heaven be so malicious (meaning harm)? Nurse: Romeo can be so malicious, but heaven cannot. Oh Romeo, who would have thought you would do it? Romeo! Juliet: You devil, how can you torture me like this? This treatment is as bad as hell. Did Romeo kill himself? If you say yes I will be more poisonous than a snake. I will not be myself if you say yes, or you shut your eyes to show yes. If he has been killed say yes, if he hasnt say no. These short words will decide my happiness or sadness. Nurse: I saw the injury with my eyes, on his chest. A bloody pitiful corpse; Pale body all covered in wet blood and clotted blood. I fainted when I saw it. Juliet: My heart will break! My empty heart will break! I will lock up my eyes to never freely look about me again! I will give my body back to the disgusting earth; to end my living. My body and Romeo pressed in one coffin. Nurse: Oh Tybalt! My best friend! Oh polite Tybalt! Honorable man! Why did I live long enough to see you die? Juliet: What disaster are you talking about? Is Romeo killed and Tybalt is dead? My dear cousin and my more dear husband?

Then let the trumpets sound out the doom! Who can live when those two are dead? Nurse: Tybalt is dead and Romeo has been banished because he killed Tybalt. Juliet: Oh God! Did Romeo kill Tybalt? (his hand shed his blood) Nurse: He did. Curse the day, he did. (it did, meaning Romeos hand did shed Tybalts blood) Juliet: Oh heart of a snake with a face like a flower! Did a dragon ever live in such a beautiful place? Beautiful tyrant! Angelic fiend(demon)! Raven with Dove feathers, wolf-eating lamb! Hated substance (person) with heavenly image, opposite of what you seem to be. You saint to be damned (detested/hated), a villain who seemed honorable! Oh nature, what had you to do in hell when you did buried the spirit of a demon in the sweet body of a man? Was there ever a book containing such offensive matter and so beautifully covered? Oh that deceit should live in such a gorgeous place! Nurse: There is no trust, no faith, no honesty in men. All men lie, all men are wicked(naught). Where is my man? give me some water alcohol (aqua vitae = water of life) These grieves, these woes, these sorrows make me old. Shame come to Romeo! Juliet: Blisters on your tongue for wishing that! He was not born to be shame(be bad). Shame is ashamed to sit on his head, because it(his head) is a throne where honor should be crowned. Only king of the whole earth. Oh, I was a beast to find fault in him! Nurse: You talk kindly of the man that killed your cousin?

Juliet: Should I speak badly about my husband? Ah, my husband, who will smooth your name when your wife of 3 hours has injured it? But why, villain, did you kill my cousin? That villain cousin would have killed my husband. Back, silly tears, back to your nave tear ducts. Your tears should be sorrowful, which you mistakenly offer happily. Tybalt would have slain my husband, but he lives. And Tybalt is dead because he would have killed my husband. This is all comforting, but then why do I weep? I was murdered by a word worse than Tybalts death. I would gladly forget it, but oh, it sticks in my memory, like guilty actions within the mind of a sinner. Tybalt is dead, and Romeo is banished. That banished, that one word, banished is equal to the slaying of 10,000 Tybalts. Tybalts death was worse enough if that was the end. Or, if sorrow needs fellowship and to be ranked with other sorrow, why not follow, when she said, Tybalts death, Romeo is banished. To speak that word is the same as saying father, mother, Tybalt, Romeo and Juliet are all murdered and dead. Romeo is banished. There is no end or limit to the death that word brings. No words can explain that sorrow. Where are my father and mother, Nurse? Nurse: Crying and moaning over Tybalts body. Will you join them? I will bring you there. Juliet: Wash his cuts with our tears? My tears will still be spent over Romeos banishment when theirs are dry. Pick up those ropes. poor ropes, you are useless, you and me because Romeo is exiled. He made you to climb into my bedroom, but I , a virgin, will die a virgin-widow. Come, rope. Come, Nurse, I go to my wedding bed. And death, not Romeo, take my virginity!
