Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in Tottenham, London, to her single teenage mother on May 5th, 1988. At age four she began singing, saying that she became obsessed with voices. At age eleven, Adele and her mother moved to West Norwood in South London. Then at 16 Adele released her first record, Hometown Glory, which she had written herself. Adele graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in May 2006. Four months later, she published two songs on the fourth issue of an online arts publication. A friend heard the song and suggested Adele to XL recordings. She met with a representative who suggested her to a manager, Jonathan Dickins. In June 2006 Dickins became her official representative. She later went on became the first recipient of the BRIT Awards Critics' Choice and was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2008. Adele states she was influenced as an artist by the Spice Girls as a young girl. She used to impersonate them at dinner parties when she was younger. Adele is categorized in the soul genre, with her lyrics describing heartbreak and relationships. Adeles voice is categorized as a contralto, which helps create her rich, jazzy voice, which is often compared to Amy Winehouse.
