Anticipation Read Guide Aloud

To allow students to make an educated choice regarding a novel for independent reading

Steps 1. You have been working with students on the concept of voice; now students will take their new understanding of the concept and apply it to a text they will read independently. If you are providing students with novels for independent reading, allow them to spend some time getting familiar with their choices. To anticipate the reading, it would be a good idea for you to conduct a brief book talk for each of the books you are offering. You might share a brief summary of the novels and read aloud an interesting passage from each novel. If students are selecting their own novels for independent reading, be sure they understand the essential features outlined in Independent Reading of a Novel at the beginning of this unit. The dialectical journal (Conversations with My Novel) should be used to monitor and assess student understanding of their independent reading. Students also could complete Interviewing a Character at some point while they are reading the novel.
