Promoting Child Development and Learning Students prepared in associate degree programs use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and of multiple influences of childrens development and learning, to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for all children. 1.b: Knowing and understanding the multiple influences on development and learning Rationale In my childcare program, I strive to establish close relationships with children and families and encourage the same between the children. By providing a safe, appropriate environment with many opportunities for play and learning and offering support and resources for children and families in need, I influence childrens development and learning. To demonstrate my competency of NAEYC standard 1b, I chose a research assignment that I completed in the fall of 2011. I interviewed a preschool teacher, a kindergarten teacher, and a pediatrician. By talking to each of these individuals, I strengthened my knowledge about assessing children, talking to parents about concerns, and referring families to proper service providers when necessary. Reflection Through this experience, I gained a greater understanding of the need to assess children, communicate with their families, and provide resources when needed. I heard from others in the profession about the rewards and frustrations of working with children and families. As I reflect on this experience, I realize the many influences on development and learning and my responsibility, not only to assess children, but also to learn as much as I can about each childs needs so I can provide a healthy, respectful, supportive and challenging environment.
