Determination Of Concentration Carbonate(CO32-) ion:

Metal carbonate is a basic compound, meaning that it generates hydroxide ion (OH - ) when dissolved in water. Hydrochloric Acid is acidic meaning that it releases protons(H +) when dissolved in water. When combined, aqueous solution of Sodiam Carbonate and Hydrochloric Acid generate an acid-base reaction.

Metal carbonate is water-soluble ionic compound. In water it separates into its respective ions in a process known as dissociation. The carbonate ion is responsible for the basic behavior of metal carbonate because it generates hydroxide ion by extracting a proton from two water molecule. CO32- +2H2O HCO3 + 2OHHCL is the strong Acid which dissociated into, HCl H+ + ClWhen acid base combined, they produce a salt and water. In case 2HCl +CO32- 2Cl- + H2CO3 H2CO3 H2O +CO2 Overall, 2HCl + CO3- H2O +CO2 + 2Cl-

Procedure: 1. Make .1 M HCl solution 2. Take 10mL of sample water into a 100mL beaker 3. Add 1-2 drops of bromophenol blue as indicator 4. Titrate it with prepared .1 M HCl

Data collection: Let, Volume of HCl= V1 Molarity of HCl =S1 Volume of the sample = V2 Concentration of carbonate = S2 Calculation: Calculate the concentration of CO32- from the equation

2V1S1 = 2V2s2
