Shear Strength Of Soil

'Name: Anas Adeeb Alshare ID: 20080023066 Due Date: 15/4/2012 Eng: Hind Shatnawi

:Objective :Unconfined Compression test Shear strength of soil can be given by Coulomb equation s=C+tan but for saturated clay is 0 so the equation will be .S=Cu The UCT is used to determine the value of Cu of the clayey soil and the equation of the shear strength is .Cu=qu/2 where qu is unconfined compression strength The test is conducted by applying axial stress only on a cylindrical specimen and draws the stress strain diagram for the .test :Test results

Note: Load x 10.5 Deflection x .01

So From the graph we have qu=46x10.5=483N To find stress we have corrected area which is A=Ao/1- S=Load/2xA

:Triaxial Test For the Triaxial test we apply a confining of about 400kpa to a specimen with Ao=10cm2 and draw the stress strain diagram with UU test it's unconsolidated undrained test which has the same law and method ford determining S as unconfined test :Test Results .External Graph

:Discussion and conclusion in the determination of unconfined CT it's better to conduct-1 .the test on three identical specimens to have a better value the consistency of the soil is varied according to qu of the-2 soil the stiffer the soil the higher the qu Errors may be occurred due to calibration of the Machine and-3 .poorly molded specimen shear strength determination of the soil is very important-4 parameter for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil which is a very important design parameter .for earth structures
