RUSSELL The Russell City Council voted not to accept a section of private road into their road system after a long discussion during their Monday, April 23 regular meeting. The decision came several months after officials from Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital asked for a name change from Addington Drive to Our Ladys Way. On checking its record, the city discovered the section in question had never been accepted by the city. A vote settled the issue by authorizing the mayor to decline the hospitals offer to dedicate that section to Russell. In other business, the council received an update on the senior center project, rejected bids on a truck and authorized the purchase of the truck through state contract, heard that the Safe Route to School improvements are back on track and that talks are underway with the company building the Ironton-Russell bridge on payroll tax. The council approved a contract with the company which provides software for the citys billing and records system and tabled a decision on an electrical inspection ordinance until the next meeting. The council also set the first budget meeting for 6 p.m. May 7.

AT&T adding more workers

GRAYSON At a time when goodpaying jobs are at a premium, good news came with AT&Ts announcement that its adding another 50 customer service representatives to join the 100 new hires already this year. The announcement came Monday at the call center in the East Park industrial park; among those reporting for their first day on the job were residents of New Jersey and Indiana who are moving here for this opportunity. AT&T was the first occupant at the industrial park and Rep. Tanya Pullin thanked the company for its confidence in locating there. She also applauded the quality of workers the local area provides and AT&Ts commitment to this call center. Mary Pat Regan, president of AT&T in Kentucky, said that the East Park center is the number one service center in the company. John Gross, manager of the call center, said the credit doesnt belong to him. Its the staff, he said, telling the new employees that this is a place where they can grow and establish a career.

Bethany Harris of the Rolling Hills Folk Center asked the city to become a partner in its series of concerts to be held this summer at the Flatwoods City Park. This is the second year for the concerts; Harris asked the city to be a partner both in financing and advertising. She said the first concert will be June 9 with bluegrass music. In July, Americana/folk music will be featured, and jazz and blues will be the August offering. The final concert in September will feature soft rock and pop. All musicians will be local, and three acts will be featured each night. In other business, the council approved the hiring of Lucy Harris as tax/account clerk and the reappointment of David Craft to a three-year term on the city's board of adjustment. Action on appointing a storm water advisory committee, which all Kentucky cities are required to have, was held over to the next meeting.
