INTRODUCTION

In recent times, MATLAB/SIMULINK has emerged as the most widely used and industry accepted standard platform for the design and analysis of engineering systems. Initiating with an introduction on the fundamentals of MATLAB, the course is primarily aimed at giving extensive coverage on the algorithms and tools incorporated in MATLAB, useful for modeling and analyzing various systems in electrical and electronics engineering. In this regard, primary stress would be laid on power electronics and power system, control system, and biomedical engineering. The participants would be provided necessary skills and hand-on experience to solve the equations governing the system, examine the system response and design suitable mechanism for improving the system behavior. The simulation sessions would be supplemented by the detailed descriptions about the numerical techniques and associated theoretical background behind the well developed tools and concepts so as to avoid the usage of the software as a black box. The various approaches for representing the dynamics of power electronics systems such as DC-DC, DC-AC converters etc. would be dealt. Conventional and advanced controller design techniques would be implemented using different platforms. Signal processing and data based system identification techniques would be discussed with examples of biomedical systems. The participants will get a clear understanding about the advantages and limitations of various modeling and controller design techniques, along with the possible selection for a specific application. The integration of MATLAB with a PC/FPGA based real time digital simulator for power electronics application will also be addressed.

DEPT. OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Department of Electrical Engineering, NIT Rourkela was established in 1961. Since its inception, the department has equiped students with the necessary skills to grasp and develop new technologies and trends in respective domains .Alongwith B.Tech in electrical engineering, the department presently runs three M.Tech programmes with the specializations in (i) Power Control and Drives, (ii) Electronic Systems and Communication, and iii) Control and Automation. A new course on Industrial Electronics will start from July 2012. Besides this, a good number of Ph.D students are carrying out research in different areas of Electrical Engineering. The department has several well equipped laboratories with state of the art facilities such as Control & Robotics laboratory, Embedded Systems & Real-Time laboratory, Power Electronics & Drives laboratory and Signal Processing & Communication laboratory.

ABOUT NIT ROURKELA

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela formerly known as Regional Engineering College (REC), was established in the year 1961. It is a prestigious Institute, that thrives to produce quality Engineers and Scientists in Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. The campus spread over an area of 262 hectares in the eastern end of the Rourkela steel city beyond sector-1, includes the institute building, halls of residence and staff quarters. The campus has all the necessary facilities for the development of the personal, social and academic skills of the student community. Surrounded by a range of hills and home to one of the largest steel plants of India, the city of Rourkela is well connected to all parts of the country by road and rail. It is situated on the Kolkata-Mumbai line of the South Eastern railway. Nesting amidst greenery on all sides, NIT campus is approximately 7km from

FACULTY
The course has been designed by the faculty members of NIT Rourkela keeping in consideration the latest trends in the field. In addition to the faculty members of NIT Rourkela, lectures will be also be delivered by the experts from IITs.
