F. Developing Mastery Solve this problem.

The two arithmetic means of an arithmetic sequence are –

19 and – 11, find the first and the last term.

Solution:
If the sequence is like this __, 19,-11__, then common
difference (d) is -30. First term 49 and last term is -41.

G. Finding practical The heights of five runners are 160 cm, 137 cm, 149
applications of cm, 153 cm and 161 cm respectively. Find the mean
concepts and skills in height per runner.

Expected Answer:

Solution:

Mean height = Sum of the heights of the runners/number

of runners

= (160 + 137 + 149 + 153 + 161)/5 cm

= 760/5 cm

= 152 cm.

I. Evaluating learning Paper and Pencil Test (Individual)

Solve this problem carefully.
If four arithmetic means are inserted between -6 and 29.
What is the second mean?

Expected answers:
First term is – 6, sixth term is 29
Finding the common difference (d)
a6 = a1 + (n-1) d
29 = - 6 + (6-1) d therefore, the second mean is 1
29 + 6 = 5d

Content: Arithmetic Means
DISCUSSIONS:
ARITHMETIC MEAN
The numbers between arithmetic extremes are called arithmetic mean, found in an
arithmetic sequence wherein each term is obtained by adding a fixed value called the common
difference.
Example : 4, 7, 10, 13 16 the arithmetic means are 7, 10 and 13
Example : 9, 15 , 21 the arithmetic mean is 15
The arithmetic mean or the “mean” between two numbers is sometimes called the
AVERAGE of two numbers. It is also possible to insert any numbers of terms between any two given
terms such as that the whole set of numbers will form arithmetic sequence.
Example: Insert 3 arithmetic means between 1 and 17
Use the arithmetic sequence formula to find the common difference (d).
an = a1 + (n-1)d a 2 = a1 + d a3 = a1 + 2d a4 = a1 + 3d
a5 = 1 + (5-1)d a2 = 1 + 4 a3 = 1 + 2(4) a4 = 1 + 3(4)
17 = 1 +4d a2 = 5 a2 = 9 a4 = 13
16 = 4d
d=4
Example: Insert arithmetic mean between 95 and 185
95, ____, 185
  an = a1 + (n-1)d OR Let A = 95
B = middle term
185 = 95 + (3-1) d C = 185
185 = 95 + 2d
185-95 = 2d Since B is the middle term of the two, then
90 = 2d
Prepared by: EUNICO REY L. BUAGAS ( A+C ) 95+185 280
d = 45 SST – 1 B= = = = 140
