CONURBATION OF ZARDOZI CRAFTSMAN

Thesis 2012-2013

Introduction
Varanasi is often said to be located between two confluences: one of Ganga and Varuna, another of Ganga and Assi (Assi having always been a rivulet rather than ariver.) Banaras besides being a holy place also has the distinction of being a world famous center of hand-made textiles. The ancient traditions of weaving are more preserved in Banaras than anywhere else. The main products are Zari and brocades. Brocades are textiles woven with warp & weft threads of different colors and often of different materials. The historical accounts of this craft are shrouded in the usual romantic stories and inaccurate data. But the only certainty is that zarkas a Persian word meaning zari or gold embroidery was widely used in all the accounts. History says that from Figure 1 India map the 13th century, the craftspeople who worked with this medium, setting seed pearls and precious stones with fine gold and silver wire, were known as zardos workers. Done with metal wire and metal pieces or sequins on velvet, satin and heavy silk bases,Zardozi is one of the most famous and elaborate techniques in metal embroidery. The original embroidery of Zardozi was done with pure silver wires coated with real gold, and was known as Kalabatun. Though silver and gold wires have now been replaced with synthetic threads, the art remains the same. The use of metal embroidery in Indian textiles and costumes, especially those used for ritual or ceremonial purposes, demonstrates the importance of gold and silver within the culture. CONURBATION OF ZARDOZI CRAFTSMAN

Thesis 2012-2013

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh is one of the oldest cities in the world and is often seen as the harbinger of tradition. One component that forms an integral part of its rich historical and cultural heritage is the intricately woven handloom Varanasi Zari products. These beautiful Zari works had a huge market. The weavers of these had a viable and profitable livelihood option. However cheap quality machine made imitations of the traditional profession gradually flooded the markets, reducing the demand for the handloom products. The whole Figure 4 Zardozi craftsman weaving system underwent a series of degradation with middlemen exploiting both weavers and buyers, ultimately resulting in the lowering of quality. Changing work culture combined with modern tastes and high costs of production transformed the Varanasi Zari work into a rare and elite possession.

Overview:
This is a hypothetical project proposed by me for the upliftment or workers and also to prevent the space from converting into slum. The same project has been proposed by government in Surat, Gujrat for enhancement of workers.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:

Varanasi city has unique character. Mixture of tradition, religion, art and craft. Craftsman are important part in carrying forward this unique character. They are playing this role since many generations. The development of these should be done in this way so that they can have better environment which suits to themselves also save their culture. Weavers stay in shanty structures in unhygienic environment, not by choice but by compelling circumstances as they do not have any not social business upliftment ,also the formal housing sector being unaffordable and much beyond their income levels. So, we need to develop it in that manner so that they can flourish and grow. Design of the whole development should be sustainable. Because this is not only about 200 families or 13000 people approx. but also things related to these people. Also commercial area should be developed in this way that they dont affect from this adjoining building but also serve the people for their betterment. There should be all basic amenities with the places to fulfill their daily need in an effective and efficient way. My aim to provide the

much awaited and necessary infrastructure which will cater the need of those people, so that the problem faced by them can be solve. Also there should be some places like park, shopping, training center and recreation etc. to give them a better life.

AIM
The aim is to design a hub for zari craftsman having suitable environment and save their culture too. Commercial and working space for them and also developing basic social infrastructure to make residents sustainable.

OBJECTIVE:
To design for the programs that offer long term solutions to the problem of survival for a much broader base of creative talent. To promote the growth of a vibrant and economically viable weaver community that has the inherent capacity to create wealth and goodwill for itself and for the nation. To construct the whole buildings with the locally available material and low cost material in order to make energy efficient and sustainable structures. To save our social heritage by preserving their culture and to create a comfortable environment having all basic facilities. To educate the people and setup new vocational institutes there. To provide employment to the people to make their life better. To provide recreational facilities along with the commercial facilities for the people to interact and a happy living.

UPLIFTMENT:
Another major concern of this project is to provide the craftsman and other people of the city a better place and uplift the value of the city. Also it will act as the milestone to upgrade and enhance the cultural and economical value of city. I believe that the people such kind of traditional professions are core support of the city and must be provided with a meaningful living environment. Craftsman or in local terms karigars are generally taken as low grade people and often neglected. But craftsman are very important in representing culture and craft value of not the city only but the whole nation. Their upliftment are equally important as of other field.
