5.1 Motor Types C) Servomotors: Used extensively in industrial electronics applications Mainly used for precision position and motion control Can be larger than 50hp Any motor can be used in a servo system but for smaller load, permanent Magnet motor is used Servomotor that uses AC voltage can use large three phase induction motor

Provide a means for precise positioning and speed control without the use feedback sensors. Basic operation is to allow shaft to move a precise number of degrees each time a pulse of electricity is sent to the motor. Can control the pulses that are sent to control positioning and speed. Rotor of the motor produces torque from the interaction of magnetic field in the stator and rotor. Strength of magnetic field is proportional to the current sent to the stator and the number of windings.

Sheet material is fed into a press where it is cut off to length with a knife or sheer. Sheet material may have a logo or certain registration mark that cannot be cut. Control problem is to synchronize the speed and position of the sheet material with correct cut off point.

The feedback sensor could be an encoder or a resolver that is coupled with a photoelectric sensor to detect the registration mark.

(cont) 5.4.2 Application 2: A Servo Controlled..

Control problem is to control the position of the fill nozzle and also the speed of product flow such that the nozzle is aligned to the bottle mouth. Multiple filling heads line up with bottles on a continuous line. Each filling head must match up with a bottle and track the bottle while it is moving. Product is dispensed as nozzle moves with the bottle. Control system must track the velocity and position of the bottles as well as the position of the filling carriage. Servo drive system utilizes a positioning drive controller with a software that allows position and velocity to be tracked as the conveyer line moves the bottle. A master encoder tracks the bottles as they move along the conveyer line. A detector will detect if bottle is in position, or mission or disposition, to ensure no spill.
