Hello Sir VIV Very Important Veteran !

Object: Some requests about Phalsbourg Air Base buildings during the years 1950-1960.

I am embarked upon researchs on the Heritage represented by NATO Air Bases .. their marguerites! and their buildings .. in France. I have set up a non-profit association called Aero Marguerite for touring exhibitions about air installation heritage of the "Cold War". I have elaborate the concept AMGM AeroMuseum Global Marguerite = Global Cold War Air Museum concept.

I am particularly fond of going on NATO Air Bases, making photographic inventories. Aero Marguerite looks like an observatory of the evolution of air installations heritage of the "Cold War" over the years. Presently, to trace the history of Phalsbourg Air Base PAB I am making a photomontage for a permanent historical board in one of the buildings still existing on the base. So I am trying to list the buildings having existed during the 50's and 60's and for this I need your help. If you have got PAB firmly fixed in your mind, please let me know how to recall buildings' functions and uses? Aero Marguerite also needs pictures: aircraft, buildings, equipment, vehicles, work & recreation life,.... Please could you help us to find some copy of them. Thank you so much in advance for all your answers to my demands. Handwritten and email is OK. Looking forward to hearing from you soon and possibly some other Veterans. Yours sincerely.

On the following 1959 aerial photo of PAB,

down right you can see a question mark << ? >> on a building quite in front of the Dining Hall 310 and in the line of the Bowling Alley 312. This building also appears on a 1954 plan of paper (updated in 1955 and 1956). On a 1952 plan on paper of PAB project, the Library is situated there. But the 1962 Base Guide points out the Library in the Service Club 201. So my questions are: 1. Which function had this building? 2. Was it the building number 311? 3. After American departure, in 1967, this building is no longer standing: was it a temporary building then dismantled? or demolished? On the same USAFE master plan excerpt you will find hereunder, I noticed: the building 106. It was initially previsted for accomodating the Maintenance & Supply Group but an extract of the Telephone Directory dated 25 Sept. 1963 gives Base Nursery there. My question is: * Was it the provisional situation of the Base Nursery as Hospital 205 was under construction? Apparently, the project to build NCO Club near the Gymnasium 213 never becames a reality. Please: * Where was situated the NCO Club? And which number had it? A temporary building T? was dedicated to the AFEX Auto Parts and maybe also to the Auto Hobby Shop. My questions are: 1. Do you agree with this? 2. Was this temporary building near the Theater 109? or the Chapel 110? 3. Were they also in the same area T122 Youth Center and T123 Quartermaster Laundry?

PAB

Photos dated 1957 and 1963 point out the Commissary inside the large Supply Warehouse 401.

May I suppose that: 1. The Commissary stayed here before the construction of bldg 120 planned for receiving it? 2. The Commissary stayed here in building 401 permanently?

According to somebody Delicatessen and Class VI took place in this building 120 hereabove.

PAB 4

Building 107 .. planned to be Air Base Group .. is named School on one plan. On another document the Dormitory 208 seems to have been adapted for American Family School.

May I ask you: * Have both buildings 107 and 208 > been used as a school? > at the same moment or not?

Refering to a Guide to Phalsbourg Air Base 1963 the Rod & Gun Club is located in building 502. A photo let us find it between the TWR Operations 505 & the Link Trainer 504... Please: 1. Thank you for reinforcing this place on the plan 2. Or, if not, adjusting it on the same plan at its convenient place. 3. Was it made of wood ? Or of particle board ?

PAB 5

In the U formed by the 3 buildings nr. 306, 307, 308 of the A.I.O. Air Installation Office there was a Fillod metallic prefabricated building like this one hereunder.

* At PAB: 1. what was its use? 2. Has it a designated name or number?

I would like to know the numbers allocated to: 1. the 3 Hangars facing the aircrafts great apron just near the TWR Operations505. 2. the 6 Butler hangars set up in 1961 on the marguerite racetrack when Berlin Crisis. All these Hangars has been locked down in 1967 when American departure.

This photo dated 1962 shows Toul Rosires Air Base "Butler" hangars, a C-47 Skytrain of the 66 CAMRON and a Vedette. When Berlin Crisis in 1961, "Butler" hangars has been installed on the reactivated USAFE Air Bases: Etain, Phalsbourg, TRAB,.......
